Position Summary

The Bridge Preservation Engineer works with relevant partners, stakeholders, institutions, and associations to further the state of the practice/knowledge and the adoption of proven as well as innovative preservation treatments by state and local highway agencies.

Primary duties include:

  • Providing NCPP with the required expertise to address bridge preservation related activities, needs, and challenges;
  • Identifying, promoting, and facilitating the implementation and dissemination of proven solutions, best practices, and emerging technologies for bridge preservation;
  • Leading, organizing, and facilitating annual regional and quadrennial national and regional bridge preservation partnership meetings and any other related work groups/meetings/conferences as necessary or required;
  • Helping to establish national and regional technical working groups on topics or technologies identified by the regional partnerships as high priorities and coordinating the activities of the groups;
  • Consolidating the concerns and needs of our partners and stakeholders;
  • Helping to provide an environment for learning and training;
  • Supporting and participating in outreach activities;
  • Serving as a technical resource and expert on research and other NCPP projects and initiatives;
  • Identifying and pursuing opportunities for the bridge program growth;
  • Developing, organizing, facilitating, and delivering professional training courses, workshops or seminars;
  • Maintaining close communications with all sectors of the bridge preservation community and providing technical advice and assistance as needed.
  • The successful candidate will be required to represent NCPP at relevant meetings and events, coordinate recruiting efforts for new partners and sponsors and expand networks of preservation practitioners.  The Bridge Preservation Engineer reports to the Director of the NCPP.  Level of effort will be variable from week to week, based on activities underway and needs, but will average a commitment of 20 hours per week (50% of full time). The successful candidate will be required to travel and represent NCPP at relevant meetings and events (estimated 6 – 12 trips per year).  MSU strives to provide a flexible work environment and this position has been designated as fully remote.

Required Degree

Bachelors -Civil Engineering


Minimum Requirements
  • A BS degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline
  • Licensure as a Professional Engineer
  • Ten years of bridge engineering experience with a highway agency, such as a state or county transportation agency, or equivalent
  • Progressive technical and managerial experience in bridge preservation that includes supervision of professional staff, effective internal and external communication, program development, operational oversight, and budget responsibility
  • Demonstrated leadership and effectiveness in organizational and strategic planning
  • Ability to pursue and grow NCPP bridge program
  • Ability to integrate related activities with other entities to produce continuity of effort
  • History of developing and maintaining effective working relationships with diverse partners and stakeholders in achieving common goals

Desired Qualifications
  • Research experience, including as a principal investigator on competitive grants
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with highway bridge maintenance operations, construction practices, materials, and bridge design
