Position Description
The Nutrition and Global Health Program at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow with an interest in food systems, climate change, and planetary health. The fellow will work in close collaboration with Dr. Wafaie Fawzi and other members of our team in Boston and at partner institutions that are part of the Africa Research, Implementation Science, and Education (ARISE) Network.
The world faces complex nutrition and health challenges, with climate change at the center of these issues. The African continent is experiencing increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, including heat waves and droughts, erratic rainfall, and flooding, with lasting impacts on nutrition and health. The relationships between extreme heat, climate change, nutrition, and health are bi-directional and their impacts are multi-dimensional.
The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will contribute to ongoing and new trials and prospective cohort studies in partnership with institutions in Africa and Europe. They will also access and analyze data on food systems, health, and the double burden of malnutrition obtained from national surveys as well as climate data that are satellite-derived and obtained from community-based weather stations. This position provides the opportunity to develop and expand skills in statistical analysis, manuscript writing, and grant writing.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
· Contribute to field operations for implementation of epidemiologic studies, including tracking recruitment, retention, and overall quality assurance
· Analyze incoming data to provide data-driven feedback and data quality reports to study teams
· Access and harmonize data from multiple sources and domains
· Communicate with research partners on study progress and regulatory issues
· Independently lead analyses of existing datasets to examine priority research questions
· First-author and co-author abstracts, poster presentations, and peer-reviewed manuscripts
· Contribute to funder technical reports and new research grant development
· Provide mentorship for graduate students and fellows
· Other duties as required
Basic Qualifications
Applicants should have a PhD/doctoral degree in epidemiology, nutrition, environmental health, global health, or related public health field. Candidates should also have the following:
1) Strong quantitative, analytical, and writing skills
2) Global health research experience
3) Expert knowledge of SAS, Stata, or R
4) Demonstrated ability to work independently, under supervision, and as part of a team
Additional Qualifications
Two or more years of research experience in global health and with at least 6 months of experience in clinical trial research is preferred. Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, commitment to collaborative partnership with US and Tanzania staff, strong interpersonal and communication skills, strong attention to detail, excellent time management, and meticulous and consistent follow-through is required.
Special Instructions
Two or more years of research management skills, and technical expertise in the conduct of research studies. Excellent organizational, and problem-solving skills, strong interpersonal and communication skills, strong attention to detail, excellent time management, a goal- and detail-oriented work style, and meticulous and consistent follow-through on projects are required. Experience liaising with Institutional Review Boards, other regulatory bodies, and academic and governmental institutions preferred.
This is an 18-month position based in Boston with the possibility for extension; the position will be considered hybrid with several days required in the Boston office in addition to days of virtual work to be aligned with the team schedule.
