Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The goal of the UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (HPDP) is to prevent chronic disease and reduce health disparities. Investigators and staff at HPDP work with communities to conduct research, provide training and translate research findings into policy and practice. Research areas include nutrition and physical activity, cardiovascular health, diabetes, obesity, healthy food access, cancer prevention and control, children’s health, rural health, and health equity. HPDP is part of a network of 26 CDC Prevention Research Centers across the United States.
Position Summary
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The Children’s Healthy Weight Research Group at UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention is currently recruiting for an Obesity and Health Promotion Postdoctoral Research Fellow. This full-time position is available for two years. There is potential for extension beyond two years, with the expectation that the scholar will work with the project team to secure funding for additional years.
The research position offers ample opportunities for training in clinical trials, manuscript writing, grant writing, use of innovative technology, and methodology, and for assuming leadership roles. Considerable attention will be devoted to developing the fellow’s line of research. Responsibilities include providing mentorship to research staff and students; developing intervention materials in the areas of obesity, physical activity promotion, and dietary change; assisting with data management; conducting statistical analyses; and writing scientific manuscripts and making presentations at national conferences. It is expected that between 20-50% of the fellow’s time will be devoted to project management and guiding intervention development as part of clinical trials in the areas of obesity prevention, obesity treatment, and/or lifestyle modification.
The ideal candidate will have a doctorate in nutrition, exercise science, or any public-health related discipline. A strong background in statistical analysis and excellent writing skills are required.
The Center’s mission is to collaborate with research and community partners to enhance the ability of public health practitioners, as well as individuals, groups and communities to promote health and prevent disease. Identify funding opportunities and support high quality research. Conduct, evaluate and disseminate innovative, community-based research. Develop education and training programs to translate research into public health practice.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Doctorate, or pending doctorate completion, required
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
A doctorate in nutrition, exercise science, or any public-health related discipline. A strong background in statistical analysis and excellent writing skills are required.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience with grant writing, clinical trials, and proficiency with statistical software (e.g., SAS, R) preferred.
