Title Postdoctoral Fellow in Atmospheric Science Engineering
School Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences
Department/Area Environmental Science and Engineering
Position Description
A postdoctoral position is available at Harvard to work on MethaneSAT
(https://www.methanesat.org; launch Q1 2024) in the near term. The research involves developing scientific and operational algorithms for satellite data analysis, and applying this analysis to airborne and satellite remote sensing data to determine emission rates. It will include participation in airborne measurements by MethaneAIR, used to develop the XCH4 algorithm for MethaneSAT before its launch and to analyze emission rates from oil and gas infrastructure in North America. The research involves improving atmospheric spectral fitting, spatial inversions, anomaly detection, instrument calibration, image processing, airborne measurements and validation of measurements.
Basic Qualifications
Ph.D. in aerospace engineering, atmospheric science, meteorology, physics or a related field
required
Additional Qualifications
We also seek candidates with a strong background in remote sensing of atmospheric trace gases, spectroscopy, and modeling of atmospheric observations.
Strong programming skills (e.g., Fortran, Python, R) and shell scripting under Unix/Linux environments, and extensive plotting and mapping capabilities are crucial for this position. Strong communication skills and a good track record of writing scientific papers will also be helpful.
Special Instructions
Please submit a current CV with publications listed, as well as a minimum of two reference letters.
