School of Medicine

Established in 1930, Duke University School of Medicine is the youngest of the nation's top medical schools. Ranked sixth among medical schools in the nation, the School takes pride in being an inclusive community of outstanding learners, investigators, clinicians, and staff where interdisciplinary collaboration is embraced and great ideas accelerate translation of fundamental scientific discoveries to improve human health locally and around the globe. Composed of more than 2,600 faculty physicians and researchers, nearly 2,000 students, and more than 6,200 staff, the Duke University School of Medicine along with the Duke University School of Nursing, and Duke University Health System comprise Duke Health, a world-class academic medical center. The Health System encompasses Duke University Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital, Duke Raleigh Hospital, Duke Health Integrated Practice, Duke Primary Care, Duke Home Care and Hospice, Duke Health and Wellness, and multiple affiliations.

The Moseman lab at Duke University School of Medicine is seeking a motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our team in the Department of Integrative Immunobiology. Our lab studies how the immune response within the olfactory mucosa is shaped by the unique anatomy that provides chemosensation and CNS barrier function. We use a variety of infectious pathogens along with transgenic mouse models to study immune response initiation and tissue specific effector functions.

The olfactory mucosa is mucosal barrier within the upper respiratory tract, dedicate to chemosensation and linking the outside world with the central nervous system. Our lab has recently identified an endothelial level barrier that restricts access of large molecular weight serum proteins, including antibodies from accessing and protecting the olfactory surface. Reliance on local cellular immune responses for protection suggests a number of tissue specific immune adaptations are employed. We are interested in exploring innate intrinsic roles for cells of the mucosa in protecting against pathogen invasion and replication; antigen presentation capacity within the olfactory mucosa; lymphocyte heterogeneity, and innate cell coordination.
