Position Summary
A Postdoctoral Research Associate A postdoctoral research position is available at the UNC Blood Research Center. The Blood Research Center is a nexus of interdisciplinary research of non-malignant blood disorders across UNC. Our current research spans cellular and non-cellular factors that impact hemostasis and thrombosis, including crosstalk between coagulation and inflammation in different cardiovascular and hematologic disorders.
Our research focuses on translational research, taking clinical observations to the laboratory to gain better insight into disease pathogenesis and potential treatments for Sickle Cell Disease and Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPN).
The laboratory offers three ongoing projects:
Investigating the contribution and the mechanism by which activation of contact pathway contributes to the thrombo-inflammatory complications associated with sickle cell disease. The study will involve using a humanized mouse model of sickle cell disease as well as clinical samples obtained from sickle cell disease patients.
Investigating the mechanisms of venous thrombosis and chronic kidney disease in Sickle Cell Trait. By dissecting the role of RBC sickling in the harsh biophysical environments observed in venous thrombi and in the renal medulla, we expect to identify potential strategies to prevent the related clinical complications.
Investigating the qualitative cellular changes in MPN that lead to increased thrombotic risk, using both patient samples and mouse models. A JAK2 V617F mouse model of MPN will be used to evaluate pathogenesis of increased thrombosis. Human MPN samples will be collected and banked for single cell RNA sequencing and studies of coagulation potential to identify biomarkers of increased thrombotic risk and how current MPN-directed therapies affect those pathways.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
MD and/or PhD in Biology or Pathology, or a closely related discipline. The candidate should have at least two first author publications.PhD in Biology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Toxicology, Immunology or a related discipline.
