Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill up to two Nursery Plant Pathology Program Student Internship positions for the North Willamette Research and Extension Center at Oregon State University (OSU).
The student intern performs routine to complex technical or specialized tasks in support of research and educational projects.
Internship is expected to start early to mid-June. However, the start date may vary depending on when the selected student’s spring term ends.
This position is located in Aurora, OR at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center.       
Position Duties
50% – Support for on-going research and outreach projects in the Healthy Plants and Bilingual Education program.
50% - Development of independent research project; interns will be mentored and guided through this process.
Examples of research duties include
  • Plant propagation and care in a greenhouse setting, plant evaluation for disease, data collection, data entry, report writing, sample preparation, laboratory sample processing, microbial culture collection management.
  • Development of an independent project, experimental design and setup, data collection and analysis.

Examples of extension and outreach duties include:
  • Support for ongoing webinars through presentation build and design, writing and formatting educational material for the Oregon nursery industry, especially in the areas of plant disease, and increasing the program’s presence on social media. Collaborate on an ongoing project developing a diagnostic manual for nursery workers.
  • Travel to offsite research locations may be required.

 
Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Must be a current student at an accredited university or community college studying Plant Pathology, Horticulture, Crop Science, Agriculture, Biology or be able to explain how this internship will benefit current studies in a field other than those listed here.
  • Perform assigned tasks without close supervision.

  • Maintain a positive and respectful attitude.
  • Student employees (but not all employees) may be selected to drive to offsite locations, as needed, at the request of the farm manager. Drivers must be over 18 years old and have successfully completed OSU’s required motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per OSU Standard 576-056-0000et seq.12
  • Competence in Microsoft Office programs including Excel, Word and PowerPoint

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • Work is mainly performed outdoors, in scientific laboratories, research greenhouses, and office settings.
  • Student may work in environments around chemicals, pesticides and loud noises.
  • The ability to work in and dress appropriately for all weather conditions is required.
