Position Summary

Student Health Services offers primary medical care and health promotion to students of San Diego State University through a wide range of programs and services.  Care is provided by board certified physicians, certified nurse practitioners and other medical staff including nurses, clinical laboratory scientists, x-ray technologists, medical assistants, and pharmacists.  In addition to the basic medical care, Student Health Services offers health education, orthopedics, osteopathic manipulative treatment and psychiatry.

The Phlebotomist/Clinical Laboratory Assistant within Student Health Services, under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager, performs phlebotomy and varied non-technical laboratory procedures in processing or preparing laboratory specimens, and materials and supplies. This position provides clerical support to the laboratory, including answering phones, responding to requests from providers, students and support staff, and assisting lab manager with assigned record keeping.

This is a full-time, benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on or before June 30, 2022.  This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and are eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent and six to twelve months of related experience in a healthcare setting or equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. 

License and Certifications Required

Possess and maintain valid certification as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I, as defined by the California Department of Health Services, which permits the incumbent to perform skin punctures and venipuncture.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One-year experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • One-year experience entering data into an electronic health records system.
  • Experience working with college students or young adults in a college health center setting.
  • Working knowledge of diagnostic codes used in insurance billing.
  • Experience preparing samples for testing at reference laboratories.

Specialized Requirements

  • Demonstrated skills and efficiency in the use of computers and laboratory information software systems.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $3,494 per month.  CSU Classification Salary Range: $2,912 - $5,168 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
