2024 AGGIE SCHOOL OF ATHENS:  Philosophy Camp for Teens

The Department of Teaching, Learning & Culture's award-winning Philosophy for Children (P4C) program includes the Philosophy Camp for Teens each Summer. This camp enables campers to work collaboratively with Texas A&M University faculty, staff, and counselors and, most importantly, with each other to think carefully about some big ideas. Campers will learn and practice critical thinking and improve logical and creative thinking.

What we want

We're seeking an individual with a passion for Philosophy to serve as Philosophy Camp for Teens - Summer Camp Senior Staff Assistant. The Philosophy Camp Senior Staff Assistant will support the Camp Director with both the middle and high school weeks of camp. They will be involved in the logistics and camp planning leading up to the camps. During the weeks of camp they will supervise non-faculty camp staff and facilitate philosophy discussions with the campers during the camp days. Other duties as assigned will include communications between campers, camp parents, and staff; ensuring that all required paperwork is completed; editing and collecting materials for the camp course pack; and helping to organize and manage the distribution of shirts and other camp materials to campers. Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in philosophy or related humanities field.
  • Three years of experience teaching or coordinating camp programs.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Skill facilitating philosophical discussions with youth.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and in a timely manner with camp staff and campers.
  • Ability to work well with others, especially college students, and middle and high school age students.

Other Requirements and Factors:

  • All training required by the University to work with youth must be completed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD. Background in Philosophy as a discipline.
  • Interdisciplinary knowledge in humanities fields.
  • Training in philosophy for children pedagogy.
  • Experience teaching K-12, especially middle and high school students.
  • Graduate students in the humanities fields: Philosophy (preferred), English, other disciplines with a literary or philosophical orientation (e.g., rhetoric, comparative literature, languages, political theory).
  • 60 hours of graduate work in a humanities field, camp assistance experience, and five years' experience as a philosophy camp counselor. Background in Philosophy for Children or similar pedagogy.
  • Evidence of philosophy pedagogical experience or participation on pedagogy workshops required.

Essential Duties/Tasks

  • Assistant to Camp Director - Assist with philosophy camp during the camp weeks
  • Supervision - Supervise non-faculty camp staff.
  • Running of day-to-day camp operations - Facilitate philosophy discussions and support non-faculty staff in their facilitation.
  • Camp Planning and preparation - Camp planning, meetings, and training with non-faculty staff. Preparation of course pack and reading materials for campers.
