Description
Provide and maintain a safe and secure environment in which academic pursuits may flourish, in accordance with the established goals of the University of Colorado. Provide for the safety and security of persons and property on the UCCS campus. Enforcement of state and federal statutes and University rules and regulations. Responsible for reporting, investigating and processing criminal and non-criminal incidents on the UCCS campus. This position exists to supervise Police Officers in the enforcement of institutional, municipal, county, State and Federal laws and regulations for the well-being and protection of life and property at this institution. In the absence of the department director and division managers, this position will also supervise dispatchers, environmental health and safety, and office support or student staff.
Job Duties:
Supervision
- Supervise Institutional Police Officers (Intern and Police Officer I and II) positions to oversee the work performance and conduct of others where there is opportunity for personal control and inspections of work performed. Evaluate subordinates’ reports and job performance. Supervise, student security, and staff security officers to oversee work performance and conduct of others. In the absence of the division manager, position supervises police, environmental health and safety, and police dispatch. Resolve informal grievances and recommend corrective and disciplinary action for subordinate police officers and student workers.
Training
- Train Police Officers and Security personnel in the use of police equipment, police techniques and department and university rules, procedures and policy. Oversee police/field training program according to field training protocols. Provide training to Public Safety employees to include but not limited to Police Officers, dispatchers, and security workers in a variety of skills areas including but not limited to tactical procedures, communications, CPR/First Aid.
Patrol and Enforcement
- Patrol by vehicle and on foot all properties owned or leased by the University of Colorado Colorado Springs to detect and deter criminal activity, and to promote a sense of safety/security. Respond to and investigate reports of criminal activity. Enforce federal, state, and local laws from petty offenses to felonies and arrest, release, or incarcerate offenders. Enforce traffic, parking, and campus regulations.
Personnel
- Interview applicants for public safety positions during the hiring process and recommend applicants to the director
Policy/Statutes
- Interpret policies, regulations, local, state and federal statutes, and intergovernmental agency agreements for correct job results, response and performance.
Special Events
- Schedule special events coverage of public safety personnel for the safety of the attending public and participants
Investigations
- Conduct interviews and interrogations of victims, complainants, witnesses and suspects within the guidelines of current legal practices. Write reports documenting investigations of criminal and/or suspicious activity for actual or suspected violations of laws and institutional rules and regulations. Prepare cases for presentation in municipal, county, and district courts. Be prepared to testify as to their accuracy.

For the purposes of FLSA, this position has been determined to be non-exempt from (eligible for) overtime under FLSA.
What We Offer:
Salary Range: Generally starting at $68,012 - $87,757
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Current Colorado POST certification
- Three years of experience as a certified police officer in a Law Enforcement Patrol position
- Successful completion of an Associate’s degree or 60 semester hours of college course work may be an acceptable substitute for one year of the required law enforcement experience.
Preferred Requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution of higher education
- Previous supervisory experience
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit. Employee is occasionally required to move. Tasks may involve using a computer screen continuously for long periods of time. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
