Description of Work Unit
Campus Recreation, an auxiliary unit in the Division of Student Affairs, provides wellness and healthy lifestyle oriented programs, events, and services to Colorado State University students and employees via seven programmatic areas: Student Recreation Center, Aquatics, Fitness, Intramural Sports, Sport Clubs, Outdoor Program, and Climbing Wall. Eight service units – Membership Services, Business Office, Information Technology, Communications/Marketing, Facility Scheduling/Event Management, Custodial Services, Equipment Management, and Maintenance – support the program functions to provide seamless customer service to CSU students, employees, and their families. Campus Recreation facilities, programs, and services promote a sense of community, support student development through leadership and employment opportunities, and encourage the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle to a diverse University population. Campus Recreation employs 34 career staff, up to 50 part-time staff, and 300+ student staff who are committed to providing a safe, welcoming space to CSU community members from all backgrounds and fitness levels. Position Summary
The Outdoor Programs Instructor will report to the Assistant Director – Outdoor Programs and is an integral role which assists with administering and delivering comprehensive Outdoor Programs and extended orientation programs throughout the summer semester. The position is negotiable up to 40 hours per week from June 2022 through August 2022, excluding CSU holidays.
Position Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience with campus recreation programs, services, or facilities
  • Experience with outdoor recreation or education programming, leadership, and/or guiding
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and work independently to complete assigned tasks and problem-solve to achieve desired outcomes

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with rock climbing, backpacking, hiking, and stand-up paddleboarding programs
  • Current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and/or Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician (WEMT) certification for duration of employment.

  • Lead, facilitate, and instruct Summer 2022 Outdoor Programs activities such as outdoor rock climbing, stand up paddleboarding, and day hiking.
  • Responsible for on-site risk management of all activities including participant and scene safety, weather, equipment, and transportation.
  • Transport and drive University vehicles to field locations.
  • Complete all necessary pre and post-program documentation and procedures.

  • Lead, facilitate, and instruct multi-day Summer 2022 Ram Connect Orientation programs including camping, water sports, hiking and rock climbing.
  • Deliver extended orientation curriculum and experiences to first-year undergraduates to orient and support their transition into Colorado State University. Serve as a role model for new students while leading the activities.
  • Responsible for on-site risk management of all activities including participant and scene safety, weather, equipment, and transportation.
