The Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County Nutrition and Physical Activity Educator will primarily be responsible for delivery of established nutrition and physical activity public education programming to improve healthy food and lifestyle choices among families and individuals encompassing all age groups. Programming will occur primarily at farmers’ markets and schools in Sullivan County, with occasional outreach in Orange County to meet grant objectives. This position will also include assisting with coordinating farmers’ market redemption coupons.
This is a three year 1.0 FTE grant-funded position. Funding is provided in part by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP) and Garnet Heath.

    

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree in the field of Nutrition, Health Education or Public Health or equivalent. GED/High School Diploma plus one year of transferrable program/functional experience is acceptable.
  • Sports, fitness, personal training, or similar certification is required.
  • Elementary school and youth experience.
  • Experience relevant to the role of the position.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and/or weekends.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to transport/move supplies and equipment, climb stairs with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read and write proficiently) in English.
  • Ability to present effective educational lessons to target audiences and work with diverse audiences of all ages.
  • Ability and willingness to work with diverse audiences and maintain cultural sensitivity.
  • Proficiency with windows-based software including use of the internet and Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Excel.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, clearly, and tactfully through verbal, written and electronic methods.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to work independently and as part of a team with internal and external partners at multiple levels within organizations and across communities.
  • Ability to organize, manage, and prioritize multiple tasks, deadlines, requirements, and priorities to complete work in a timely manner and within established deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the community in which the work will take place and ability to utilize program resources within the community.
  • Familiarity with purchasing and preparing foods.
  • Familiarity with reviewing and following recipes and assure compliance to federal and state guidelines.
  • Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities developed with the immediate supervisor.
  • Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read and write proficiently) in Spanish.

Program Responsibilities:

Program Delivery – 75%

  • Deliver high quality programming to individuals and groups utilizing approved curricula and existing program materials and resources.
  • Under the direction and oversight of the Supervisor, occasionally adapt lesson plans and materials as needed to meet established program objectives.
  • Assist with implementing environmental program initiatives, such as community and school gardens.
  • Represent CCE before the public, participants, community leaders, government officials, Cornell or other land grant universities in a professional manner as part of program delivery.
  • Implement lesson plans with multicultural needs using current and approved curricula and supplemental materials, and tailor appropriate programming based on identified participant needs as applicable. Use a variety of delivery methods including workshops, public events, articles, newsletters, web pages, and social media to deliver program.
  • Serve as subject matter resource and respond to questions about nutrition and community health.

Program Evaluation – 5%

  • Interact with program participants, advisory committees, Cornell program specialists and faculty, county and community leaders to assist in obtaining evaluation data for programs.
  • Assist in communication of evaluation results and findings.
  • Make recommendations for improvement/changes to strengthen and improve programmatic offerings.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Coordination/Operation – 15%

  • Utilize existing program materials to recruit the targeted number of both adult and youth participants in the GusNIP Program.
  • Organize and coordinate GusNIP and Warrior Kids program activities (i.e. food demonstrations, direct nutrition and physical activity lessons to adults and youth, etc.) to support delivery of established program goals.
  • Assist Supervisor in identified administrative aspects of the GusNIP Program including, but not limited to: preparing correspondence, maintaining files, maintaining participant records, etc. ensuring confidentiality of all information.
  • Transport program materials and resources necessary for performing position responsibilities.
  • Effectively maintain existing professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts. 
  • Assist in providing marketing materials in the promotion of GusNIP programming efforts to include, but not limited to: print media, news media, social media, multi-media efforts and the environmental change initiative in collaboration with other nutrition educators.
  • Accurately collect and prepare paperwork as required for the program evaluation process.
  • Assist in providing existing information to bring awareness to the public in the form of impact statements, articles for progress/annual reports, etc.
  • Assist with coordinating, compiling, and organizing existing program resources and program materials.
  • Complete and submit program reports and financial documentation to meet funding agency requirements.
  • Prepare and submit accurate expense reports, mileage reports, receipts/supporting documentation, and/or vouchers in a timely manner per established policy and procedures.

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • In cooperation with the Supervisor, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.
  • Participate in all required orientation, training, and/or in-service meetings and trainings as scheduled/required. 
  • Pursue personal growth through expanding personal knowledge of the total organization and through updating techniques and technical skills relating to the position.
  • Carry out assignments and other duties as assigned by the Supervisor, including but not limited to local health fairs, community activities, etc. Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Cooperative Extension programs and other duties as assigned.

This is a full time, 37.5 hours per week, benefits eligible, non-exempt position. Compensation paid at the rate of $20.00 per hour.
