ROLE of the POSITION

Primary responsibilities include working in collaboration with other Network Development and Engineering staff to implement, design, operate and maintain the UNLV enterprise network and cable plant infrastructure. The enterprise network is composed of routers, switches, firewalls, security appliances, wireless controllers, access points, broadband radios, and inside/outside cable plant infrastructure. This position will also provide support for DNS, DHCP, VPN, SYSLOG, TACACS, and other infrastructure related services. The Network Engineer will install, upgrade, configure, troubleshoot and support these and other UNLV networking components based on the defined network standards and procedures. This position will serve as a point of escalation for complex network connectivity issues requiring troubleshooting skills and an understanding of routing protocols. The person holding this position will consult with internal and external clients, as requested, to provide solutions to unique network requirements.

The Network Engineer will participate in a weekly on-call rotation and respond to and schedule network outages outside of business hours.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and a minimum of 3 years professional experience with Cisco or Juniper router and switch installation and configuration.

CCNA, CCNP certification or equivalent preferred.

The incumbent must have specific skill and knowledge in the following areas:

KNOWLEDGE

Required

  • Knowledge of the following: LAN switching technologies, routing technologies, wireless infrastructure, network infrastructure services such as DNS, DHCP, NTP, etc., and network infrastructure maintenance and operation.

  • Proficient with networking components (routers, switches, firewalls, access points, wireless controllers, unified communication), network protocols and technology (e.g. OSPF, MPLS, IPv4, IPv6, FHRP)

  • Knowledge with structured cabling system and outside cable plant

  • Hands-on experience with configuration and troubleshooting networking components

  • Hands-on experience with installation, configuration, and troubleshooting of wireless access points, wireless management systems and associated technologies

  • Must be willing to adjust shift schedule to perform maintenance and upgrades outside of business hours a minimum of once per week

  • Ability to develop and deliver oral briefings or presentations at meetings of peers within the unit to communicate technical knowledge and new information.

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects/network equipment that weigh up to 20 lbs. frequently

  • Ability to lift network equipment that weighs up to 45 lbs. occasionally

  • Ability to learn technologies through research and self-studies and share knowledge with others in the units.

SALARY RANGE

Salary competitive with those at similarly situated institutions. The position is contingent upon funding with a minimum starting salary of $78,600.
