JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Cellular Cardiovascular Laboratory, within the Department of Kinesiology, seeks a qualified individual for the position of Research Technologist 3, Laboratory Manager. The candidate will work under the direction of the laboratory’s faculty principal investigator.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing molecular and cellular biological and physiological experiments to include flow cytometry, western blotting, real time PCR, cell culture, isolated heart experiments, coronary artery ligation surgery or other surgical procedures, dissection, mitochondrial isolation, and microscopy in rodents (a minimum of three skills

  • Animal husbandry including weighing animals by following IACUC protocols is expected; prepare and serve as point of contact for all IACUC protocol submissions and ensure ORP/AAALAC compliance

  • Preparing and troubleshoot buffers, solutions, and protocols; implement new experimental techniques and approaches; oversee routine equipment maintenance

  • Manage data collection and monitor incoming study data; assist with experimental plan and design implementation schedules

  • Perform immune cell isolations from blood, heart, bone marrow and spleen for cell culture and flow cytometry analysis.

  • Mitochondrial isolation and function studies. Tissues obtained may also be subjected to immunostaining and/or electron microscopy analysis.

  • Supervision of both undergraduate and graduate students with laboratory tasks, research experiments and project development. Training students working in and/or with the research laboratory. Ensuring good laboratory technique and lab book maintenance for all lab personnel.

  • Maintaining environmental health and safety records and compliance for laboratory area(s). EHS reporting and CHIMS (chemical) inventory. Maintaining all laboratory inventories, protocols and data files. Assure compliance with all regulatory agencies including EHS, NIH and DEA.

  • Managing laboratory supplies and budgets. Initiating and reconciling orders, and maintenance of records includes completion of necessary paperwork and interaction with departmental administrative staff to resolve all purchases and orders. Follow up with individual companies may be necessary.

  • Entering, managing, and analyzing data. Familiarity with Microsoft Office, database management, and statistical software (e.g., R, SAS, SPSS) are required. Prepare graphs for, and assist with publications, grants and reports to sponsor.

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and excellent communication skills are essential for frequent interaction with the laboratory team, co-investigators and staff at multiple locations.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher (Master's degree preferred) plus seven years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The candidate will implement high-quality research and laboratory programming, protocols, and compliance, and must possess strong written and oral communication skills. Applicant must be comfortable working in an animal research setting.

This is a limited-term appointment funded for one year from the date of hire with an excellent possibility of re-funding.
