Job Description

The School of Human Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University seeks to hire two (2) qualified NAGPRA Inventory Specialists, under the guidance of the Postdoctoral Research Scholar and NAGPRA Project Leads, to assist with tasks associated with curation and Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) compliance for Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) collections.

Duties include assisting with supervising student interns and workers, updating collections information and inventories, assessing and enhancing collections housing, and documenting cultural items.

Salary Range

$20.00 - $21.15 per hour; DOE


Essential Duties

  • Supervises undergraduate students assisting with the inventory of archaeological collections from BIA lands
  • Oversees and assists with the transformation and validation of record inventory data
  • Oversees the locating and transport of archaeological objects for inventory
  • Assists in supervising the documentation of cultural items by student interns and workers
  • Moves and transports materials and objects that could weight up to 50 pounds, including the storage of items at heights that require the use of a ladder
  • Performs duties in both climate-controlled and external spaces

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of general museum activities experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working with anthropological collections (1 year)
  • Knowledge of the archaeology and material culture, history, and ethnography of the American Southwest
  • Knowledge of archaeological field methods
  • Demonstrated knowledge of appropriate handling of curated archaeological collections
  • Experience working with data management tools such as Excel
  • Evidence of effective communication skills
  • Experience working collaboratively in a team

Working Environment

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions
