Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a per diem Research Assistant for the department of Neuroscience and Cell Biology at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
Under the direction of the Morgue Supervisor, duties include the following: place selected cadavers on tables and/or in caskets, move caskets to RWJMS vehicle in preparation for transportation, clean Anatomy lab cadaver trays and appropriate equipment, dissect/prepare anatomical specimens. This position will also provide administrative support to the operational functions of the RWJMS Anatomical Association, as needed.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Maintain and repair, as necessary, all standard laboratory equipment (pumps, racks, tables, mechanical lifts).
  • Design, procure and assemble laboratory apparatuses for biological and chemical projects.
  • Responsible for transportation of single/multiple cadavers to/from other medical facilities and to the crematory for transportation of cremated ashes back to the Anatomical Association Morgue.
  • As needed, handle telephone inquiries and assist with general office duties.
  • As needed, assist in researching information for goods/services and submission of purchase requisitions.
  • As needed, assist with donor database entry and the application process for death certificates for donor families.
  • Handle additional related responsibilities as assigned at Morgue Supervisor’s discretion.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Satisfactory completion of an undergraduate/graduate degree in a relevant science supplemented by a successful completion of a program in mortuary science internship.
  • Equivalent education, experience and/or training may be substituted for the degree requirement.
Certifications/Licenses
  • A current NJ Funeral Director License and a valid driver’s license.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand and/or communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of the position.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access).
  • Must be able to follow detailed laboratory instructions and maintain working area as per Morgue Supervisor’s specifications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two (2) to three (3) years of related experience.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Physical Demands: Ability to lift equipment, cadavers and carry boxes. Individual has to be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and assist with lifting up to 200 pounds. No special vision requirements. Be able to work in a Morgue and office environment with moderate noise.
  • Work Environment: Morgue environment and office environment, as needed. Equipment used includes dissection tools (e.g., scalpels and bone saws), hoists (electric and hydraulic) and fluid pumps. Office environment is computer use.
