Job Summary:

The Metadata Librarian provides resource description services for various library materials, including print materials, electronic resources, digital repository items, special collections materials, and other contents as needed. 

SUPERVISION

The Metadata Librarian reports to the Head of Collection Management.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Metadata Librarian has no direct reports, but may oversee the work of students, volunteers or other staff on committee work, specific projects, or as requested.

FACULTY STATUS

University of Colorado AMC Health Sciences Library faculty members serve as promotion eligible, non-tenure track faculty.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Metadata Librarian is expected to assume personal responsibility for designing and implementing a plan for continuing professional development, and to actively contribute to their profession through scholarly and service activities.

The Metadata Librarian plays a major role in the library’s efforts to develop a holistic approach to metadata practices to maximize discovery of the library’s content. The position works collaboratively to provide direction in metadata practices in cooperation with a wide range of stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Catalog materials in a variety of formats, including print materials, electronic resources, local digital repository items, and special collections materials;
  • Create metadata, maintain collections, and ingest digital collections materials for institutional repository;
  • Manage the institutional repository as part of the repository working group, and serve as the main contact person for the institutional repository;
  • Lead library efforts in ensuring institutional repository content accessibility according to the Americans with Disabilities Act and Colorado accessibility law;
  • Serves as the department’s primary resource for non-MARC metadata standards;
  • Develop and coordinate best practices in providing holistic approach to metadata practices, and to ensure the interoperability and sustainability of metadata in library catalog, discovery system, and search engines;
  • Work closely with the Electronic Resources Librarian and the Archives and Digitization Specialist to advise on policies and workflows for description and preservation of digital collections including text, images, audio, video, and research data;
  • Help develop new approaches to describing and managing research data and other digital collections to support researchers on campus;
  • Support the Electronic Resources Librarian and the library’s IT staff on implementation, discoverability, and support of electronic resources;
  • Monitor trends in national resource description standards and emerging technologies, and collaborating with local and national partners on research to advance the use of appropriate metadata use for digital library collections;
  • Assist in processing and promoting materials in special collections;
  • Participate in catalog maintenance and cleanup projects;
  • Contribute to the development of policies, guidelines, and best practices and maintain such information on designated Collection Management folders and drives;
  • Contribute to campus and library’s advancement of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility.
  • Participate in library-wide activities, such as serving on library committees and task forces.
  • Participate in cross-campus activities, such as serving on committees and task forces.
  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work creatively, collaboratively and effectively in groups as both a team leader and a team member.

Work Location:

Hybrid – this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 2-3 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:  

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.  

This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Instructor, Senior Instructor, or Assistant Professor based on experience and qualifications as indicated below:

Instructor:

  • Master’s degree or higher in library or information science from an ALA accredited library school or international equivalent
  • 1-2 years professional metadata creation experience in a library, or an institution with substantial print and/or digital collection 

Sr. Instructor:

  • Master’s degree or higher in library or information science from an ALA accredited library school or international equivalent
  • 2-5 years professional metadata creation experience in a library, or an institution with substantial print and/or digital collection 

Assistant Professor:

  • Master’s degree or higher in library or information science from an ALA accredited library school or international equivalent
  • Over five years professional metadata creation experience in a library, or an institution with substantial print and/or digital collection 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of cataloging procedures and principles as defined in AACR2 (including LC rule interpretations), RDA, the MARC bibliographic record, and understanding of the holdings and authorities records
  • Demonstrated knowledge of cataloging utilities such as OCLC Connexion
  • Knowledge of non-MARC metadata formats, standards and schema (e.g., Dublin Core, EAD, METS, MODS, etc.)
  • Professional cataloging experience in an academic health sciences environment
  • Knowledge of NLM classification and MeSH
  • Experience with technical aspects of digital repository work, such as scanning documents, creating metadata, and ingesting files into the repository
  • Experience with ExLibris Alma
  • Knowledge of discovery tools such as ExLibris Primo, and library metadata practices supporting discovery
  • Experience with digital repository software such as Hyku
  • Experience with XML and familiarity with data interchange standards
  • Experience planning, organizing, and implementing projects
  • Ability to handle, manage and initiate a variety of projects

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

Instructor: $67,980 to $72,100

Sr. Instructor: $72,100 to $79,310

Assistant Professor: $79,310 to $85,490 

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
