About the McCluskey Center for Violence Prevention
The McCluskey Center for Violence Prevention (MCVP) is dedicated to engaging in research and education to eliminate relationship and sexual violence (RSV) among college students. Specifically, we focus on the primary prevention of RSV by addressing perpetration and shifting culture. The Center’s philosophy includes focusing on education and research, including providing mental health support for people at high risk for causing harm. Further, the Center seeks to bring together researchers and practitioners to better understand and effectively address RSV among college students.
Job Summary
The Marketing and Communications Specialist in the MCVP will be responsible for working closely with the other staff in the Center to design and execute a communication strategy to educate the campus community about the role and philosophy of the MCVP as it relates to ending relationship and sexual violence (RSV). The person in this position will have a deep commitment to self-awareness and on-going personal and professional development, including a willingness to re-learn what they may have previously been taught about RSV among college students. They will also possess a commitment to understanding the relationships between violence, oppression, and domination and integrating this understanding into their work.
The person in this role will engage a number of different mediums (email, social media, website, newsletters, etc) to communicate with a variety of stakeholders about the work of the MCVP. The person in this position will translate research and academic concepts to a general audience and work to interrupt traditional ways of thinking about violence prevention. They will be responsible for communicating with students, researchers, donors, and campus partners, including campus safety personnel and student affairs staff.
Previous experience working in sexual violence-related fields is NOT required. Instead, we prefer a broad commitment to understanding the relationship between power, oppression, and violence in all of its forms, and an ability to communicate about these issues in plain, clear language.
Responsibilities
  • Develops and executes marketing/communication plans, including social media strategy and a comprehensive communication calendar
  • Develops materials to communicate Center information on various projects to its stakeholders, both internal and external
  • Monitors effectiveness of marketing/communication tactics and adjusts communication plans as necessary
  • Collaborates with members of the Center staff, including students, and campus partners to conceptualize various projects
  • Coordinates the development of fliers and posters for Center programming
  • Coordinates responses to media inquiries
  • Maintains and updates the Center’s website, including the blog
  • Works with student staff to conceptualize and edit podcast episodes
  • Develops and refines powerpoint slides for staff presentations and workshops
  • Designs and publishes annual report for Center
  • Designs and publishes reports and infographics for the Center’s research initiatives
  • Proofreads all communications and monitors media
  • Develops and adheres to project timelines
  • Works to understand and stay up-to-date on university policies and processes related to marketing and communication
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree English, Journalism, Communications, or related field plus 3 years of related experience, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills; familiarity with a variety of computer software; project management and strong interpersonal skills; ability to work both individually and in a team setting.
Some areas may require additional experience with specific computer systems and may require skills in interviewing, ad copy writing, editing, photography, web writing, graphic design, audio & video production, and oral presentation.
Master’s degree in a related field may be preferred.
