Summary: 

The Marketing Communications Manager plays a hands-on role in the development and support of HHMI’s branding, reputation, and engagement of priority audiences. As a member of the Communications team, the Manager collaborates across HHMI and works closely with team members responsible for writing and editing, media relations, content management and strategy, graphic design, social media, and project management.

Our marketing efforts support our science and education mission through recruitment of scientists and educators, branding and brand awareness, and community and public engagement. Key priorities for outreach include academic science audiences across all career stages – senior researchers, early-career faculty, administrators, and students. HHMI is currently expanding its public profile, more broadly. Because HHMI is fully supported by an endowment, the organization does not fund-raise.

Reporting to the Creative Director, the Marketing Communications Manager maintains high standards and steady focus on collaboratively defining and working toward goals for HHMI’s brand awareness and staff and scientist recruitment. We are looking for a self-starter excited to promote HHMI's mission who can skillfully partner with a wide variety of colleagues to move work forward in a complex nonprofit environment. This is a hands-on position, calling for someone who shapes, develops, and directly contributes to marketing and communications work.

This position delivers marketing research, strategies and planning, advertising, collateral materials and other communications products, and outcomes-focused measurement that advance HHMI’s mission, day-to-day business needs, and inclusive culture. As part of our Communications team, the person in this role will work in a hybrid model at our headquarters campus in Chevy Chase, MD. 

  

In this role you will:   

  • Plan and direct market research on HHMI's current brand position and target audiences.

  • Use research findings to inform strategic decisions for marketing to raise HHMI's profile and engage with key audiences in support of our science and education mission.

  • Develop strategy for, and collaborate with, colleagues to produce and distribute key marketing collateral such as factsheets, backgrounders, and other branded material or communication tools as needed.

  • Plan and manage paid media approaches, including digital and print advertising.

  • Implement a clear, consistent brand voice for HHMI across marketing materials.

  • Contribute to recruitment campaigns for HHMI programs, with the purpose of motivating scientists, educators, and students to inquire, apply, and share open competitions.

  • Develop email newsletters and marketing campaigns; build, maintain, and manage lists and segmentations; evaluate outcomes, and ensure adherence to best practices.

  • Lead efforts to develop measurement of marketing outcomes such as awareness, perception, and response to calls to action.

  • Contribute marketing planning to an integrated editorial calendar.

  • Manage work with external agencies and contractors.

  • Act as a trusted consultant and advisor to a variety of colleagues.

  • Build and maintain strong, cross-departmental, collaborative relationships with program and operational staff across the Institute.

  • Actively participate in the continuous improvement and development of the communications team and function at HHMI.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • At least seven years of experience working in marketing, communications, or public relations, preferably in a nonprofit or higher education environment.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Proven ability to develop and execute effective integrated marketing campaigns.

  • Experience with the fundamentals of nonprofit or higher education marketing, including research, branding, paid marketing, email marketing, collateral materials, and measurement. 

  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize tasks to meet aggressive or overlapping deadlines.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills: openness to experimentation and ability to manage creative tension. Ability to thrive in a heavily matrixed, complex, dynamic environment and develop trust and credibility with a wide range of stakeholders.

  • Strong attention to accuracy; detail oriented.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to work virtually and as part of a hybrid team.

  • Knowledge of: Microsoft Office 365, project management tools, digital marketing strategy and tools.

Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).
