Job Description

The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning is seeking an energetic, flexible, creative yet project-oriented marketing professional. We are looking for someone who creates, drives, and manages integrated marketing plans, programs, strategies, tactics, communication platforms, initiatives, and digital content in support of recruitment, development, community outreach and scholarly promotion efforts to achieve the school's goals. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Business Operations, the Marketing Manager works closely and collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and other SGSUP/CLAS/ASU colleagues to implement and support ASU's enterprise branding, marketing, and communications initiatives at the school level.

Salary Range

$65,000 - $80,000 per year; DOE


Essential Duties

  • Plans, develops, strategizes and writes creative, high-quality communications for the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning faculty, staff, students, donors, prospective students, and the general public using multiple digital and print communication mediums such as email, print, web, and social media. 
  • Creatively generates new and interesting ways to relay stories of interest, from print and video to audio, podcasts, slideshows, and informational graphics. 
  • Produces marketing materials and collaterals including, but not limited to, brochures, promotional announcements or flyers, print advertisements, and direct mail pieces. Serves as chief copywriter and editor for these materials. 
  • Develops campaigns to support student enrollment, outreach, and recruitment. 
  • Engages with marketing and communications representatives across ASU academic and business units to source content.
  • Manages and works collaboratively with faculty, staff and students to plan and participate in university-wide events (homecoming, Open Door, Awards Ceremonies, and ad-hoc receptions, etc. Take photographs of School events and incorporate content onto the website. 
  • Builds individual email campaigns, including editing HTML, uploading images and graphics and designing campaign templates as needed. 
  • Surveys email and web analytics and helps generate performance reports and develop plans for improvement. 
  • Oversees the school website, identifying information needs and developing content as well as ensuring timely positing of news and events, and continuous improvement of the school's digital presence. 
  • Supervises additionally hired marketing and communications staff, student employees or management interns. 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing or closely related field AND five (5) years of experience in a public relations/marketing role; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working in Higher Education, creative services or agency setting. 
  • Experience writing in AP style, media relations, pitching stores, content development, and editing. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of strategic planning, communication and marketing principles. 
  • Evidence of effective written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Experience in using creative and critical thinking skills, goal setting with attention to details. 
  • Experience using content curation skills, transforming content across platforms to meet different audience needs; ability to visualize the best way to present content. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of web content best practices.
  • Project management experience: managing multiple projects simultaneously; working effectively and efficiently with individuals and teams within a diverse environment; and using project management tools. 
  • Experience in developing effective social media campaigns and utilizing social media scheduling tools.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Salesforce Marketing Cloud or other email marking platforms.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Drupal or other website management platforms, such as WordPress.  

Working Environment

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of
sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse. Required to stand for varying lengths of time
and walk moderate distances to perform work. Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling
up to 25 pounds and regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include
and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.


Department Statement

The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning (SGSUP) is a major participant in the instructional and research activities of Arizona State University. A staff team of 20 supports 30 tenure/tenure-track faculty including four members of the National Academy of Sciences, approximately 1,000 undergraduate majors (split between campus and online) and 140 graduate students studying in one of six graduate degree programs (MA and PhD programs in Geography, a PhD in Urban Planning, a Master’s in Urban and Environmental Planning (MUEP), a Master of Advanced Studies in Geographical Information Systems, and a PhD in Geographic Information Science) as well as graduate certificate programs in GIS, social science research methods, and transdisciplinary transportation studies.
