Job Description

The ASU Migratory Student Summer Academy (MSSA) grant in the School of Transborder Studies is seeking a highly motivated Management Intern to provide professional level administrative support in implementing and evaluating Academy programming, and handling all Academy logistics. Successful individuals in this position have excellent bilingual (English/Spanish) communication and customer service skills. They have the ability to plan, organize, and implement to successful completion within a team setting. 

The Migratory Student Academy is a state-funded enrichment program for the high-school-aged children of Arizona’s migrant seasonal farmworkers (MSFW), focusing on leadership and instruction in core subjects of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The activities of the Academy include leadership workshops, hands-on classroom instruction, and socio-cultural enrichment in a day or residential or virtual camp setting. 
This is a full time temporary position from April 2024 through August 2024.

Applicants must be available to facilitate and attend the Peer Mentor Training and MSSA session.

Salary Range

$25.00 per hour


Essential Duties

Serves in an intern capacity for the specified program, MSSA, which may include the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Support the MSSA team programs and goals; support strategic action plans in accordance with the MSSA program objectives.
  • Monitor expenditures, operations, logistics, and scheduling. 
  • Aide in the logistical needs (e.g. reserving rooms, arranging lodging and meals, hiring of student staff, mailing of student maker kits, etc.) of MSSA.
  • Support marketing plans to familiarize parents of migratory students with Academy goals, introduce them to staff, and cultivate buy-in
  • In collaboration with MSSA partners, ensure a culturally inclusive curriculum that adheres to Arizona Academic Standards
  • Support application review processes and participant communications for programs.
  • Provide supervision, training, and leadership to assigned student staff to maximize impact for migratory students and families. Provide guidance as needed for staff to problem solve.
  • Monitor development of action plans for assigned staff to ensure successful program implementation. Serve as on-site contact for crisis management for program staff and students.
  • Interact and act as liaison with students, faculty, staff and outside/community partners in facilitating program objectives. Maintain communication with the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) Migrant Education Program. 
  • Prepare comprehensive reports on program activities for the PI and ADE/Migrant Education Program (MEP) 
  • Collaborate with PI and STEM liaisons to develop and administer evaluation tools/ instruments; Assess programming and makes recommendations for improvements
  • Significant availability weeks of MSSA for recurring responsibilities related to the position, such as nightly programming for students, staff meetings and supervisory one on ones, and relationship building among participants.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Applicant must demonstrate strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks, demonstrate professionalism, excellent verbal and written communication skills, resourcefulness and good problem-solving abilities.

  • Applicant must be self-motivated and have flexibility in schedule to allow for fulfillment of position responsibilities.

  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) – Spanish proficiency may be verified during interview.

  • Ability to maintain accurate project records and prepare summary reports.

  • This position is considered safety/security sensitive and will include a Fingerprint Check. Background clearance and fingerprinting screen provided by ASU. Offers of employment are contingent upon satisfactory fingerprint check results.

  • Experience in the following areas: working with middle school and/or high school students; managing multiple tasks and priorities and remaining flexible in job duties; Planning, analyzing, and coordinating activities and events.

  • Experience with and/or sensitivity to characteristics and needs of migrant and seasonal farmworkers (MSFW) and their rural communities or other underrepresented populations

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborations with families, school districts, and migrant-serving agencies

  • Knowledge of program coordination.

  • Knowledge of basic project management.

  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.

  • Skill in planning, organization, coordination of activities.

  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

  • Skill in effective communication, both verbal and written.

  • Skill in the use of personal computer and related software applications.


Working Environment

Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computer; bending, stooping, reaching and lifting up to 20 pounds. Various activities will require applicants to lead groups of students on and off the ASU Tempe campus for various classroom activities and field trips, as well as walk long distances in the summer heat moving from activity to activity.
