Job Summary
Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track faculty position at the rank of Lecturer-AT in the Department of Human Physiology beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year. This one-year position has the possibility for annual renewal during a three-year probationary period, after which a rolling, three-year contract may be issued. Program and Position: Vibrant, growing, undergraduate human physiology program (with approximately 235 students) seeks a faculty member to teach primarily in the areas of physiology. Gonzaga’s campus sits adjacent to downtown Spokane, WA, along the Spokane River in the Inland Northwest’s most metropolitan region. We exist on the traditional homelands of the Spokane people, one of the Interior Salish speaking tribes of the region. Spokane is Washington’s second largest city and boasts a vibrant restaurant, entertainment, and arts community; it is also home to a diverse array of neighborhoods and popular outdoor recreational areas. Essential Functions
  • Teach the equivalent of 24 credits per academic year in the BS in Human Physiology curriculum. Teaching assignment will include lectures and laboratories in anatomy and physiology, other current courses offered by the department that align with the candidate’s expertise, and opportunities to develop new courses not currently offered in the curriculum. 
  • Serve as lead instructor and work collaboratively with faculty and staff to ensure alignment between lecture and lab sections for anatomy and physiology courses and share evidence-based strategies for the courses is expected.   
  • Serve as academic advisor to Human Physiology majors.
  • Academic citizenship: Active participation in service to the department, the School and the University is expected. 
  • Professional development: Ongoing engagement with the discipline is expected, professional development as it’s related to both pedagogy in physiology education and inclusive and culturally responsive teaching practices are encouraged. Opportunities to pursue pedagogical training to promote evidence-based teaching strategies is encouraged. 
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or ABD in Physiology or related discipline (Biomechanics, Rehabilitation Sciences, Movement Sciences, etc.), with the requirement that the candidate will have their degree conferred by July 15, 2024. 
  • Demonstrated ability to teach (with evidence) at the university or college level (these abilities could be result of being the instructor of record, significant TA experience, mentored teaching, etc.).
  • Demonstrated knowledge about cultural competence in academic settings and experience supporting and/or mentoring students from diverse backgrounds and those historically underrepresented in higher education. 
Desired Qualifications
  • Demonstrated evidence of skills in technology applied to classroom and laboratory work.
  • Experience working collaboratively with others (instructors, teaching assistants, etc.) to promote a consistent student experience in the classroom and in labs.
  • Experience in, or a strong desire to engage in, the pedagogy of science courses and using evidence-based teaching strategies to inform one’s teaching.
