The Birey lab at Emory University is looking for a highly motivated individual to join our interdisciplinary team as a lab manager. Our lab uses state of the art organoid and assembloid technologies to understand the cellular processes that shape the development and function of the human cerebral cortex to ultimately identify potential disease targets.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Under minimal supervision, performs a variety of specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures.
  • Uses independent judgment in applying or adapting scientific techniques.
  • May assist in protocol design.
  • Investigates and proposes alternative experimental procedures for consideration by a principal investigator.
  • Assists in planning and scheduling research procedures.
  • Analyzes and interprets results of studies.
  • Demonstrates and trains others in the proper use/operation of laboratory techniques and equipment.
  • Calibrates, troubleshoots and performs routine repair and maintenance of equipment.
  • Reviews literature for related research developments and techniques and compiles findings.
  • Monitors laboratory processes to maintain quality assurance standards.
  • Records results of studies, compiles and analyzes data and prepares charts and graphs.
  • Monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.
  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

  • The successful candidate will work under the guidance and supervision of the principal investigator, and will:
    • Oversee the daily activities of the laboratory including: stock maintenance, ordering and organizing of reagents and equipment, management of chemical inventory and safety records, ensure compliance with safe and health lab regulations and trainings, and general lab support (75% of daily activities).
    • Train or oversee the training of new research staff and students, and provide technical and scientific support in the laboratory (15%).
    • Contribute to ongoing research projects by designing and performing experiments (cell culture, cell and molecular biology techniques, microscopy, etc), analyzing results, and contributing to the preparation of scientific publications (10%).
    • The successful candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as excellent organizational skills, the ability to maintain detailed records of experiments, general computer skills and the ability to quickly master the use of scientific computer programs and databases and will be motivated to learn new skills and techniques.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field and two years of research experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field and at least 2 years of experience working in a laboratory.
  • Experience and knowledge of cell culture techniques, and neurobiology, cell biology and/or stem cell assays
  • Experience working in a research laboratory
  • Lab admin & management experience
  • Excellent organizational skills

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location.  Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
