Position Objective

The grounds and landscape team at Clover Park Technical College work diligently to maintain our campus grounds, parking lots, and roadways to ensure a safe, attractive, and accessible outdoor environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.  Your talents would contribute greatly to the beauty of our campuses.
As a full-time Grounds and Landscape Technician, the primary functions and responsibilities are to maintain campus grounds, parking lots, and roadways to ensure a clean, safe, attractive, and accessible outdoor environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. You will work with a team committed to maintaining an already striking landscape.  You will be working mostly outdoors in all types of weather and near operating machinery with loud noises and vibrations.  Your duties may be performed on ladders or man lifts.  Some indoor work including planning, tool maintenance/cleaning, completing work assignments, and training.
 
The Grounds and Landscape Technician performs a variety of tasks from the upkeep of the grounds, custodial, and operations all within the Facilities department.  This crucial position has an important role in maintaining the college's health, appearance, and cleanliness standards.  
This position is an overtime-eligible, full-time position.
This position has been designated as a bargaining unit position represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 302.

Duties and Tasks (Essential Functions)

The Grounds and Landscape Technician
performs grounds and landscape maintenance, removes and replaces trees, shrubs and other plants as needed, the collection and disposal of leaves and debris, repairing and maintaining the campus irrigation systems.  The Grounds and Landscape Technician may also assist custodial services with cleaning tasks as needed and facilities personnel with such tasks cleaning sidewalks and roofs and shoveling snow/dispensing ice melt as needed.
 
Perform grounds and landscape maintenance assist custodial and assist as needed to support the operations of the college campus

  • Cut, edge grass areas and blow and sweep up clippings.
  • Weed the flower and shrub beds manually and/or using appropriate chemical herbicides and pre-emergent products.
  • Properly prune shrubs and trees to promote proper growth and to avoid rot and disease.
  • Collect and properly dispose of cuttings, leaves, clippings, and trash from all grounds areas as it relates to best environmental practices.
  • Perform proper operator maintenance on hand tools, power tools, and power equipment used in performing grounds maintenance tasks.
  • Service and maintain the smoking shelters located throughout campus as well as exterior trash receptacles.
  • Sweep, edge, restripe, perform weed control and fill cracks on sidewalks, roadways, and pathways.
  • Clear ice and snow from designated entrances and sidewalks located around campus and dispense ice melt as needed to ensure a safe environment at all times.
  • Use hand tools and/or power equipment safely and effectively.
  • Plan the movement or removal of vegetation to ensure proper and necessary tools and supplies are used to perform each task.
  • Repair, replace, relocate and maintain sprinkler heads, valves, and water lines to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the irrigation system.
  • Understand the operations and programming of all irrigation system models on campus to improve the efficiency of the irrigation system.
  • Assist the maintenance and/or custodial staff as needed.
  • Attend facilities training as needed.
  • Complete mandatory online and other training as required by Washington State and/or the College using a computer and various computer training programs.
  • Assist the facilities team members as needed with work activities that promote the same campus environment.
  • Attend and actively participate in department meetings as required.
  • Submit Time and Leave Report (TLR) in a timely manner.
  • Understand and maintain knowledge about any/all chemicals used in grounds maintenance and landscape.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of two years of successful working experience in a landscape operation.
  • Must possess a Washington State Driver's License, vehicle insurance, and a safe driving record.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal/written instructions in English.
  • Basic knowledge/experience using a computer.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in a Landscape Construction, Grounds Maintenance, and Irrigation Technology.
  • Current Public Operator's Pesticide License for weed, insect, and disease control.
