The University of Pittsburgh, Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology is seeking a full-time Laboratory Research Technician to provide research support in a laboratory focused on lung immunology.  The Research Technician will assist in the design, interpretation and execution of a variety of experiments (including mammalian work) in the laboratory; and also assist in the design and execution of DNA and RNA extraction from different samples, including blood, airway epithelium, and other tissues. The Research Technician, under general guidance, will conduct routine and non-routine manipulations required for on-standard testes involving various medical research, which will include assisting in the basic design, execution and interpretation of a variety of laboratory experiments. Candidate should have good knowledge of basic laboratory skills and must be able to work independently on tasks. Candidate should be self-motivated, willing to learn new techniques, open to discussion and attentive to detail.  The successful applicant should have a B.S. degree or higher in a related scientific field with at least 1 year experience. Advanced computer skills is a plus. Strong organizational skills, dependability, and good communication skills are required.



Job Summary

Performs a variety of laboratory experiments and procedures. Prepares specimens. Oversees supply management. Operates and properly maintains equipment.


Essential Functions 

  • Maintain cell culture lines and perform cell-based experiments. 
  • Prepares and performs analytical assays and tests on human and mouse samples, including but not limited to DNA and RNA extraction from blood and other tissues, PCR genotyping, western blotting, immunohistochemistry, real time PCR, pyrosequencing, Lincoplex, flow cytometry and ELISA.
  • Prepares instruments and equipment, supplies and work area in accordance with assay/test specifications.
  • Prepares reagents and solutions, mark glassware, process specimen or samples to be assay/tested into desired testing form.
  • Properly documents all information in regard to all procedures/samples in designated laboratory notebook.
  • Prepares animal care duties, including mouse breeding and colony management.
  • Prepares and performs surgical procedures and flexivent mouse lung mechanics.
  • Requires computer work; walking from place to place; standing and sitting to perform essential tasks.  Good manual dexterity.


Physical Effort 

Lifting and stacking of boxes of supplies, standing for extended periods required to fulfill workload.  Light - Maximum lifting of up to 20 lbs. With frequent lifting/carrying of up to 10 lbs. or a negligible amount, significant walking or standing may be required or may involve sitting with a degree of pushing and pulling.
