Who We Are

The Department of Atmospheric Sciences at Texas A&M University researches the physical processes that influence and determine our climate as well as providing insight into how and why the climate changes. This is an enormous topic and covers spatial scales from atmospheric chemistry, aerosol particles, air pollution, cloud particles, with radii of microns, to large-scale atmospheric waves, with length scales of thousands of kilometers. Topics studied in the department include the physics of convection, climate variability, feedback physics, climate sensitivity, climate extremes, and regional modeling.  Additional topics include, variability and predictability of climate on seasonal to millennial timescales, coupled ocean-atmosphere interaction, large-scale dynamics of the atmosphere and the oceans.  

What We Want

The Laboratory Organic Synthesis Technician will perform skilled administrative and managerial support in various research and organic synthesis related areas. The selected candidate for this position will also assist in the design, planning, and coordinating of experiments in support of various research projects.

What You Need to Know

Pay Rate: $11.50 per hour

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in chemistry or organic synthesis

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of organic synthesis

  • Knowledge of organic synthesis equipment

  • The applicant has good communication skills to discuss with the manager and coworkers about the synthesis plan

  • Lift or move moderately heavy equipment

  • Ability to stand in front of the fume hood to perform chemical synthesis up to 3-4 hours each time

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Prior experience working in research lab

  • Prior lab organizing/management experience in a university laboratory

  • Prior experience synthesizing multiple organic compounds

  • Able to work independently and as a team

  • Possesses good communication skills and able to work with all lab personnel

  • Able to effectively organize lab space, setup. and chemicals

Responsibilities:

  • Organic Synthesis: Utilizes chemicals and equipment related to organic synthesis. Conducts organic synthesis tasks in a laboratory environment. Synthesizes organic compounds. Uses computers and laboratory or technical equipment to perform data analysis, statistical analysis, and technical evaluation of research experiments and results. Selects and applies standard techniques of organic synthesis and keeps detailed records of data.

  • Other Research Projects: Assists in the design, planning, and coordinating of experiments in support of various research projects. Performs data analysis, statistical analysis, and technical evaluation of research experiments and results. Plans and directs certain phases in a research project.  Assists undergraduate and/or graduate students and other laboratory, technical or field staff involved in research.

  • Laboratory Management: Assists in preparing and writing proposals to funding agencies; maintains financial accounts related to research projects. Assists with reports, invoices, and cataloging records. Installs, operates, maintains, and/or repairs research equipment. Keeps detailed records of data.
