Laboratory Coordinator Sr
Job Description
We seek an organized, communicative, team-oriented Laboratory Coordinator Sr to oversee laboratory management and safety operations at two Centers within the Biodesign Institute, under the guidance of Center Directors Bruce Rittmann from the Biodesign Swette Center for Environmental Biotechnology (SCEB) and Rosa Krajmalnik-Brown from the Biodesign Center for Health Through Microbiomes (HTM). This Coordinator position is administrative and includes direct responsibility for assisting SCEB faculty (Hinsby Cadillo-Quiroz, Anca Delgado, Yen-Jung Lai, Bruce Rittmann, César Torres, and Everett Eustance), HTM faculty (Rosa Krajmalnik-Brown, Taichi Suzuki, Lee Voth-Gaeddert, and Esther Florsheim), and their laboratory personnel with the utmost attention to service and cooperation.

Salary Range
$46,807 - $58,509 per year; DOE
Essential Duties
- Regularly communicates with faculty and lab members. Attends all lab meetings (unless excused) to understand mission, work, and personnel and to communicate critical needs.
- Communicates with researchers to receive questions and concerns related to lab safety practices.
- Oversees creation and updating of standard operating procedures and protocols.
- Oversees onboarding of researchers to ensure that they are properly trained and prepared to conduct safe and productive research in our laboratory spaces.
- Coordinates shipment, importation, and exportation of biological samples using appropriate permits.
- Provides appropriate personal protective equipment; presents safety instruction during lab meetings; trains new faculty in proper research compliance; trains employees to use gas cylinders, to dispose of hazardous waste, to operate the autoclave, etc.
- In coordination with SCEB and HTM leadership teams, assists with space assignments and tracking to ensure that space is assigned equitably and efficiently to facilitate safe and productive research.
- Serves as a liaison for laboratory areas to outside vendors and university departments including ASU Biosafety, and Environmental Health and Safety, Risk Management, Police and Fire departments and Facilities Management to facilitate resolution of issues.
- Arranges for major repairs of equipment. Requisitions, inventories, and restocks supplies for the laboratories.
- Supervises, approves time, and is responsible for a student lab assistant, ensuring their tasks are accomplished.

Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND one year related laboratory experience; OR, Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND three years laboratory or related experience; OR, Seven years of laboratory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience working in a research laboratory; operating lab equipment or maintaining lab instrumentation; managing laboratory inventory; managing laboratory safety and knowledge of SDS and EH&S regulations; coordinating the work of others.
- Experience with Microsoft applications (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint) and EndNote.
- Experience supervising or managing employees, including setting schedules and approving time.
- Experience and/or interest in project and people management.
- Experience with permitting (for example, USDA Soil Permits, CDC Permits) and working with institutional oversight committees (IBC, IRB, etc.). Familiarity with university industrial-hygiene-plan and safety policies.

The Biodesign Swette Center for Environmental Biotechnology focuses on developing microbiological systems that capture or develop renewable resources and also prevent or clean up environmental pollution. Our team combines engineering approaches with microbiology and chemistry to reclaim polluted water and generate energy from waste substances.
