Position Overview

This position is providing general preparation and support for the Microbiology laboratory courses. A primary responsibility is to plan, prepare, and ensure adequate supplies of appropriate media, reagents, and consumables for multiple Microbiology-related laboratory courses. The position will include the training and supervision of students, and possibly staff, to assist with these responsibilities. The position will assist with compliance of environmental health and safety parameters for the teaching laboratories. This position is supervised by the Microbiology Laboratory Director.


Job Description

40% - Prepares selective and differential media and sterile supplies for the Microbiology laboratory courses. Oversees the accuracy of the quantities needed to meet the demands based on student enrollment in the laboratory courses. Keeps accurate records of media formulations currently used. Conducts literature searches for possible advances in media testing approaches. Follows necessary safety guidelines and procedures. Assists other technicians in making stock solutions, buffers, reagents and other tasks, as needed.

30% - Oversees and executes microbiology laboratory course set-up and clean-up. Ensures that the laboratories have the necessary reagents, supplies, and equipment for proper course execution. Maintain the safety and cleanliness, and assist in the repair and purchasing of equipment in work areas and teaching labs. Prepare instructions and signage to guide proper operation and use of equipment. Clean and maintain the teaching equipment & environment (e.g., microscopes, pipettes, centrifuges, water baths, whiteboards, workbenches etc.).  Provide equipment and advice to other biology lab courses, as needed.

20% - Maintains an adequate stock of laboratory chemicals, equipment and supplies for the undergraduate microbiology laboratories by ordering supplies as needed. Maintains inventory records to track quantities used, purchased and the amount of the expenses. Monitors the cost of each microbiology laboratory course. Periodically reviews current and new State Contracts and makes recommendations to State Purchasing Office. Interacts well with the public and sales representatives.  Receives feedback from instructors' regarding inventory needs each semester.

10% - Supervises student laboratory assistants. Performs other task assigned by Supervisor and KU Undergraduate Biology Program (KUUB) leadership.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Microbiology or related field that includes formal course(s) in Microbiology.
  • At least 1 year of laboratory experience that include microbial growth media and aseptic techniques as evidenced by application materials.
  • Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) as evidenced by application materials.
  • Excellent organizational skills as evidenced by application materials.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a field related to Microbiology.
  • Experience preparing science laboratory classes.
  • Experience performing eukaryotic cell culture.
  •
