Laboratory Animal Veterinary Technician Manager

Job Summary

The goal of the Purdue University Laboratory Animal Program (LAP) is to provide health care to research and teaching animals, promote animal welfare, and assist researchers using animal models in the humane and appropriate use of animals at the university.  The Laboratory Animal Veterinary Technician Manager will work with three or more laboratory animal veterinarians and veterinary nurses/assistants.  The primary role will be to manage the veterinary technical staff.  This involves scheduling, training, and personnel management.  This position will also assist the LAP veterinarians in assuring the provision of adequate veterinary care in compliance with USDA, PHS, and Purdue University regulations and guidelines for the humane and appropriate care and use of laboratory animals.  This position primarily provides assistance to veterinarians by exercising skill in the performance of common veterinary technology procedures and communication of animal health and welfare concerns both on campus and at the Purdue Animal Science Research Education Centers.  Other duties will include assisting with training investigators and other technicians, assisting in research study procedures, oversight of the animal care program at multiple campus facilities, maintaining frequent communication with animal facility personnel, and administrative duties associated with the animal care and use program such as maintaining accurate records.


Required:

  • Associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology, Animal Health Technology, or a related area
  • State of Indiana Veterinary Technician Registration
    • If licensed in another state, ability to become certified or licensed in Indiana within 6 months of hire
  • Two (2) years experience in veterinary medicine
  • Laboratory Animal Technician/Technologist (LAT/LATG) certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science or the ability to obtain LATG certification within 36 months of hire (assistance provided)
  • Must have working knowledge of veterinary technical skills
  • Ability to lift, restrain, and manipulate animals 
  • Manual dexterity, manipulation skills, and visual acuity sufficient to perform technical manipulations, as well as operate anesthetic, therapeutic, and equipment associated with the described duties 
  • Excellent interpersonal/communications skills and ability to work effectively as a team player and to manage a team 

 

Preferred:

  • Experience with laboratory research animals
  • Prior personnel management experience 
  • Knowledge of federal animal regulations
  • Research-oriented animal care experience with a variety of laboratory animal species
