Job Summary | Seeking highly motivated lab technician to contribute to studies elucidating the molecular mechanisms that drive cancer progression. PI Mei Koh’s lab focuses on the identification of new therapeutic strategies that exploit the inflammatory and hypoxic tumor microenvironment. The candidate will assist laboratory members in performing laboratory experiments, perform general lab management duties and will also be given freedom to begin their own research project, if so desired. Thus, expertise in cell signaling pathways, particularly those implicated in cancer, is highly desirable. Candidates must possess a BS degree in biology, biochemistry, molecular pharmacology or related field. Candidates should have proficiency in general cell biology and molecular biology techniques including cell culture, molecular cloning, western blots, PCR, and cell viability/reporter assays. Training will be provided if needed. Experience in animal handling/surgery is desirable but not essential. Candidates should be organized, able to work independently and as part of a team in a highly collaborative research environment. Fluency in English is required. Candidates should be eligible to work in the USA. |
Responsibilities | Responsibilities include: 1) Perform general lab maintenance work such as mycoplasma testing, buffer preparation, inventory and other lab functions as needed. 2) Perform laboratory experiments, which may include cell culture, molecular cloning, western blotting, PCR and other studies to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that drive cancer progression . 3) Plan and execute experiments, perform data analysis, have ability to work independently and as part of a team. 4) Present data in group meetings. Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required: Nearly Continuously: Office environment. Often: Infectious disease, oils (there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids), hazards (includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals). Seldom: Exposure to animals. Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking. Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting. Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead. |
Minimum Qualifications | Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.
