Job Summary
The Mills lab in the Department of Neurobiology is recruiting a technician with a computational background to assist with development of data analysis pipelines within the new lab. The primary responsibilities of the role will be to work with the Principal Investigator to develop and maintain analysis pipelines for neural recordings (electrophysiology, calcium imaging) and behavioral videos, and work with teams within the lab to apply these pipelines for analysis of data generated in experiments.
Extensive career development opportunities will exist in this position, including training in the design of experiments, and actual collection of data. There will also be many opportunities for co-authorship on studies, making it ideal for scientists looking to develop expertise in systems neuroscience research.

Responsibilities
1. Working with the principal investigator and lab members to develop, maintain, and troubleshoot analysis pipelines within the lab.
2 .Assisting teams in the lab to analyze neural and behavioral data sets.
3. Managing the storage and documentation of primary and processed data.
4. Interfacing with students and collaborators in other research groups to share computational approaches.
5. Assist with planning and setup of hardware resources (analysis computers, etc.) within the research group.

Problem Solving
This position assists senior laboratory personnel in planning methods and techniques. Work requires exercising independent judgment and basic theoretical knowledge of the applicable science. This position may include limited supervision of entry-level laboratory personnel, who may refer sensitive or unusual situations to the incumbent. If incumbent cannot find a resolution, the situation is referred to the supervisor. Work is performed in accordance with the supervision of senior laboratory personnel and through periodic conferences with superior.
Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:
Nearly Continuously: Office and lab environments.
Often: Infectious disease (replication-deficient viruses), oils (there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids), hazards (includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals).
Often: Exposure to animals, including time in animal facility. (mice)

Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking.
Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting.
Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.
Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
Preferences
  • Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience, Computer Science, Biology, or other scientific discipline or equivalency
  • Experience in the computational analysis of scientific data, and ability to develop and troubleshoot analysis pipelines.
  • Fluency in Matlab and Python, or equivalent programming languages.
  • Familiarity with statistical approaches used in life sciences research.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills to assist non-computational lab members and collaborators in the collection, storage and analysis of scientific data.
  • Excellent organizational skills, and familiarity with best practices for data management.
  • NOTE: Applicants with limited experience, but evidence of aptitude and ability to learn
