Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Lab Researcher IV for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Lab Researcher performs professional experiments using specific techniques in plant tissue culture and molecular biology.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Modifies plant tissue culture media based on plant tissue development using published findings and prior experience.
  • Keeps records of work performed and maintains a database as required.
  • Collects and processes samples, performs necessary analysis, and analyzes data.
  • Maintains and keeps the workplace and laboratory organized in a clean and safe manner in accordance with established procedures.
  • Serves as an independent researcher and completes work under the supervision of the project director.
  • Trains and leads students through various laboratory related activities including culturing plants, isolating plant DNA, conducting PCR analysis, growing plants in greenhouse and recording plant growth and phenotyping plants.
  • Makes independent decisions and communicates problems with the team.
  • Summarizes research findings for reports and publications with the team.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of science degree in plant biology, plant biotechnology or other related discipline.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Specific knowledge in plant tissue culturing is required to effectively carry out the research projects.
  • Requires independent thinking and solving problems.
  • Position also requires the ability to teach students to learn plant tissue culturing and to conduct their own research projects.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in plant tissue culturing are highly advantageous to perform the job successfully, as plant tissue culturing is not only a plant science, it is also an art benefited by working with many different kinds of plants.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master of Science or Ph.D degree in Plant Biology or related discipline is preferred.
Equipment Utilized
  • Gene gun system; PCR and real-time PCR instruments.
