Job Summary
 

The job provides technical support activities related to scientific research projects. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings.
The laboratory of Monica Rosenberg in the Department of Psychology at the University of Chicago, is seeking a full-time research assistant/lab manager for a targeted start date of spring or summer 2022. The lab explores how we pay attention, and how insights from attention research can help improve focus. A primary goal of our research is using functional MRI to discover what we can learn about individuals from their unique patterns of brain activity, and what this can tell us about the nature of the brain and mind. This is an ideal position for individuals preparing for graduate school in cognitive neuroscience.
The principal contribution of this role is providing routine or standardized laboratory or administrative duties and collecting routine data in support of research projects under direct supervision. The role will involve collecting and entering data, assisting in analyzing data, assisting with the preparation of reports and manuscripts, and maintaining and ordering supplies. Responsibilities may include the following non-laboratory duties: recruiting and scheduling research subjects; transcribing and coding data; assisting with developing data collection tools; managing data files; and providing general administrative support. Responsibilities may include the following laboratory duties: assisting lab members in preparing and conducting experiments; following established procedures or protocols, provides assistance to supervisor with research projects; performing basic laboratory techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Designing and programming experiments.
  • Recruiting, scheduling, and testing participants.
  • Analyzing behavioral, fMRI, and eye-tracking data.
  • Managing large-scale neuroimaging datasets.
  • Overseeing day-to-day lab operations (e.g., compiling information for IRB submissions and reviews, ordering supplies, maintaining the lab website).
  • Providing general administrative support.
  • Collects and enters data. Assists in analyzing data. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.
  • Assists with the installation, sets up and performs experiments; interacting with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Education:

  • High School Diploma
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • The ideal candidate for this position will have a bachelor’s degree in psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, computer science, engineering, or a related field.

Technical Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Computational and analytical skills
  • Coding skills (e.g., MATLAB, Python, R, shell scripting)
  • Familiarity with neuroimaging analysis software (e.g., AFNI, FSL, SPM) and experience with Psychtoolbox and/or PsychoPy
  • Experience working with human participants
  • Oral and written communication skills

Preferred Competencies

  • Basic knowledge in relevant scientific field
