Position Description


The Lab Manager/RAIII works in partnership with the Senior ROM to support the faculty, their research, and lab members to ensure research can continue uninterrupted. The Lab Manager/Research Assistant III provides lab support, including supporting lab infrastructures and department cores. With guidance from the Senior ROM, sets overall goals for department functionality, assists with providing guidance regarding compliance, and manages infrastructure projects in Department labs and core facilities.

1. Manages Facility/Lab Functionality:


  • Creates and follows up on work orders regarding facility infrastructure, utilities, custodial and telecommunication request
  • Coordinates equipment moves within/between labs, removal, storage, reuse, and recycling of equipment and consumables on a regular basis
  • Maintains and approves security clearance for tap card readers, requests and manages key request/lock maintenance and changes

2. Administrative tasks:

  • Works with OOF to manage, track and tag capital assets
  • Manages and acts as “power of attorney” for department-controlled substances license. This includes ordering, tracking, and distributing all controlled/non-controlled medical substances. Quarterly audits/respond to issues with lab logs/diversions. Collect and document all substances that expire and coordinate with EH&S for disposal.
  • Order/manage department supplies and shared equipment PM’s. Involves scheduling PM’s and working with technicians to schedule repairs. Ordering includes lab coats, dry ice, paper towels, and bleach.
  • Help manage lab rosters, SPACEWALKER program, and issues with Harvard Training Portal.

3. Serves as a resource for faculty, team leads and staff on complex decisions, negotiations, etc:

  • Serves as local expert on safety regulations, laboratory compliance and arranges meetings to discuss new regulations and compliance policies.
  • Builds strong relationships with people at all levels of the organization and communicates technical policy/procedure, etc. to a broad range of audiences (HMS Facilities & Operations, Engineering & Construction, EH&S, etc.).

4. Oversees Department compliance with internal and external regulatory agencies:

  • Works with labs to ensure projects and lab space are approved by applicable internal review boards COMS, IRB, and IACUC.
  • Assists labs with post EH&S inspection items to ensure operating within compliance.

5. Manages Facilities projects impacting the Department:

  • Communicates effectively with department members to inform them of events such as facility shutdowns and upgrades; coordinates work with the Facilities Department to implement new plans, policy and scheduled work to be performed.

6. Assists with setting up new and closing down labs:

  • Will assist in ensuring new labs have the resources needed to effectively and efficiently open a new lab, including scheduling large equipment moves, coordination of cleaning and custodial services, and storage of equipment.
  • Will assist with coordinating lab moves and closures.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education, plus 3 or more years of progressively more responsible experience in a research environment.

  • Successful record of mentoring and building a team with a strong service-oriented attitude.
  • Ability to work after hours should emergencies occur with respect to facilities.
  • Understanding of research lab culture and experience planning lab and research support spaces. Must be well organized, flexible, and able to multitask with grace and flexibility.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to influence others for which there is no direct reporting relationship.

This is an in-person position based on our campus in Boston.
