Job Summary
A paid position as an undergraduate research assistant is available immediately in the Mendoza Lab in the Department of Oncological Science. The successful applicant will join a research team focused on the role of mechanical stimuli in the growth and invasion of lung tumors. The main task will be to perform tissue processing and 3D confocal imaging to study how lung tumor strain is altered by the presence of nearby tissue stiffening due to fibrosis. The student will be involved in experiments, data analysis, and publications. This is a great opportunity to gain expertise in cancer research and computational simulation.

Responsibilities
Additional Qualifications
The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and have an interest in learning about cancer biology and computational modeling and simulation. The candidate should have some experience with wet lab research and an interest in biomechanics research. Course in cell biology, cancer biology, and biomechanics would be ideal.
Position Responsibilities
The student will work as part of a team including Prof. Mendoza and the graduate students and lab staff working on the lung cancer project. We will coordinate closely with Prof. Jeffrey Weiss’s research group in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. The student’s responsibilities will include:
· Mouse tissue processing and staining
· Culturing and stretching tissue slices
· Acquiring 3D confocal image data using Lieca SP8 microscope in the Cell Imaging Core
· Communicating results to the Mendoza and Weiss lab
· Attending group meetings in person and via Zoom

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:
Nearly Continuously: Office environment.
Often: Infectious disease, oils (there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids), hazards (includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals).

Minimum Qualifications
One year full-time laboratory experience or equivalency required (one year full-time lab equivalency equals successful completion of two semesters college laboratory course work); knowledge of laboratory techniques, equipment and terminology as well as knowledge of chemical and physical properties of materials or substances and appropriate specimen handling techniques required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.
