The IT Business Analyst I, under general supervision, performs routine business analysis support functions. This position works with departmental team members, the Office of the Admissions, the Graduate and Professional School and the campus community to successfully implement and maintain enhancements, upgrades, and patches to the student information system, portal, and other supported applications.

What you need to know

Salary: Commensurate on selected candidate's experience

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Four months (1 semester) of student worker and/or customer service experience

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of email, chat, desktop videoconferencing, word processing and spreadsheet applications

  • Must be able to work in a collaborative team environment

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

  • Must have strong interpersonal skills

  • Knowledge of process analysis, intermediate troubleshooting, and client relations

  • Knowledge of Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL)

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Two years of experience designing, analyzing, or implementing business processes

  • Experience using or supporting Ellucian’s Banner or other student information systems or enterprise level applications

  • Experience using SQLDeveloper to write SQL statements to query a database

  • Experience working at an Institution of Higher Education (IHE) in or supporting one of the following areas: admissions, advising, registrar / academic records, and graduate studies / graduate school

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM), ITIL Foundations

Responsibilities

Analysis and Specification Development:

  • Helps collect, analyze, review, document, and communicate business needs, requirements, and regulations

  • Assesses the needs of a client through in person meetings and electronic interactions

  • Identifies gaps between the baseline software functionality and the requirements

  • Determines the most effective method for bridging the gaps

  • Creates processes to meet the identified requirements and regulations

  • Helps document detailed functional / technical system specifications

  • Identifies scheduling requirements including frequency and run dates

  • Defines data requirements

System Testing

  • Implements and assists with testing of system configuration and maintenance plans

  • Performs assigned testing tasks on maintenance plans

  • Reports and escalates issues discovered during testing

  • For assigned projects, develops and executes testing plans that include the user interface, scripts, data, security, reports, and scheduling

  • Works with the appropriate technical, reporting, or security team members to resolve issues

  • Writes SQL statements to query the database to find cases / issues that need resolved and to verify the correct operation of the project

Problems/Change Management

  • Works with clients and technical teams to resolve production and application issues

  • Evaluates and follows through on issues and problems until resolved or escalated

  • Submits cases to the software vendor regarding issues or desired baseline functionality

  • Participates in and monitors the software vendor’s online community for new functionality, problem resolutions, or issues

Documentation

  • Documents current business processes and creates business / technical requirements for new applications, projects, and processes. Uses departmental documentation software to create and store documentation.

System Maintenance and Security

  • Writes and submits work requests

  • Configures the student information system and other supported applications, projects, and processes

  • Helps implement and maintain system security procedures

  • Collaborates with departmental team members to create end-user security groups and roles for existing and new applications, projects, processes, and reports

  • Uses best practices when working with files that contain student information; shares files using the encrypted share drives or filex, encrypts files at rest or not being actively used, and shreds files that are no longer needed

End User Training and Communication

  • Conducts training for end-users for supported applications, projects, and processes. Creates and updates end-user training materials and job aids.

Liaison Support:

  • Serves as point of contact for customers and IT staff with routing questions or requests.

Professional Development

  • Participates in conferences, training, and professional development sessions including, but not limited to the division’s Professional Development Enhancement Program (PDEP)
