The School of Medicine’s Department of Biomedical Informatics has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Research Services Intermediate Information Science Professional position.

Jobs in the Research Services career family provide direct professional support of research activities.  Functions include contracts and grants solicitation and administration, grant/agreement preparation, review and negotiation, regulatory compliance, sponsor communication and post and pre award management, human subject compliance, research animal management, research laboratory coordination and instruction, environmental health and safety, radiation control, hazardous materials use, disposal and training.

Professionals at the intermediate level are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. At the intermediate level , duties are less limited in scope and are performed independently with occasional guidance and direction from other professionals.

Nature of Work

Intermediate Information Science Professionals utilize applied or computational mathematical analyses for a wide array of different applications and to solve complex problems. Experiments may include text interpretation, coding, ground theory methodology for the analysis of certain data, and quantum state analyses. Intermediate Information Science Professionals may also perform duties in labs that use primarily electronic equipment.

The new Professional will join a highly interactive, supportive, and interdisciplinary group of faculty, staff scientists, postdoctoral fellows, and students and enjoy access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities on the Anschutz Medical Campus. The Laboratory Science Professional will play an important role in advancing the mission of research laboratories within the Department of Biomedical Informatics. Researchers in the Department of Biomedical Informatics focus on computational approaches that derive insights from data to lead to advances in research and medical practice. The Department of Biomedical Informatics focuses on areas such as automated and manual biocuration, knowledge representation, semantic engineering, natural language processing, automated reasoning, and the development and evaluation of algorithms and software systems that advance these practices in support of artificial intelligence. The Department of Biomedical Informatics is located on the Anschutz Medical Campus and is home to Colorado’s only Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Colorado Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute. There are many opportunities on campus to translate data intensive research advances into improved care.

The candidate would primarily collect and analyze data about collaborative science practices and inclusion while embedding in an active Health AI research team. Other duties include contributing to publications, as well as partnerships and collaborations with the community-wide efforts aimed at promoting open, integrated, and rigorous practices in research and scholarly communication. They would contribute to a diverse portfolio of research in the Translational and Integrative Sciences Laboratory at The Department of Biomedical Informatics. TISLab is a multidisciplinary laboratory focused on uniting data across domains using semantic technologies, forming a key part of the Monarch Initiative (monarchinitiative.org). TISLab works on rare disease diagnostics, clinical data harmonization, genotype-phenotype data across species, and using ontologies and knowledge graphs for data integration and inference. This position may be eligible for remote or remote/office flex work.

Examples of Duties Performed

  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders in the area of bioinformatics and data analysis
    • Perform data collection, analytics, and visualization for the Teaming Core of the NIH BRIDGE Center (https://commonfund.nih.gov/bridge2ai)
  • Perform scientifically rigorous data management and bioinformatic analyses
  • Develop and disseminate a variety of tools designed to access relevant clinical and sample data
  • Develop and implement complex analyses pipelines, programming, and data visualization techniques for multi-layered -omics datasets (transcriptome, epigenome, proteome, microbiome, etc.)
  • Creatively and effectively integrate data from multiple sources to accelerate discoveries
  • Assist with the design and development of major bioinformatics-related programming projects
  • Write custom scripts to access databases and analyze data
  • Write custom web tools for PIs and other stakeholders
  • Independently and creatively identify bioinformatic and data management solutions
  • Assist Team Leads, Supervisors and/or management with creation and implementation of processes and procedures and quality improvement initiatives
  • Assist and train junior team members

Salary and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established at $54,534 to $69,367.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Data Science, Computer Science or related field
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis
  • One (1) year data management and bioinformatic analyses experience

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Data Science, Computer Science or related field
  • Two (2) years of experience analyzing data using high-performance computing
  • Ability to handle qualitative data – mainly written responses
  • Basic computer programming experience or willingness to learn

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of basic statistical principles relevant in medical research
  • Ability to analyze and solve complex problems and apply quantitative analytical approaches
  • Demonstrated fluency in one or more programming languages (e.g., R, Python, Perl, Java, C++) and willingness to learn new programming languages as necessary
  • Familiarity with statistical analytical concepts and methods
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution
