Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes, Pediatrics Clinic has an opening for a full-time Instructor (RN/RD- Diabetes Educator) position.

Nature of Work 

The Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes at the University of Colorado  Anschutz Medical Campus is a multi-disciplinary diabetes center affiliated with Children’s Hospital Colorado as well as the University of Colorado, School of Medicine. The patient population is primarily children with type 1 diabetes, but also includes youth with type 2 diabetes. In addition to the clinical program, the Barbara Davis Center has a large basic research program allowing many ongoing educational opportunities. This Instructor position is an at-will faculty appointment. This position will provide diabetes care and education to patients with a new diagnosis of diabetes and also established children who have mainly Type 1 Diabetes. This diabetes educator will develop, implement and evaluate care management plans for patients with complex health needs by providing leadership that facilitates the ongoing development of clinical practice in pediatric diabetes. This diabetes educator may also assist with implementing clinical trial protocols and providing diabetes care and education for youth enrolled in a clinical trial. This appointment will involve approximately 50% clinical work in the pediatric clinic and 50% clinical research work, supporting clinical studies for primary investigators, Paul Wadwa, MD, Erin Cobry, MD and Gregory Forlenza, MD.

Supervision Received 

This position formally reports to the Director of the Pediatric Clinic; Paul Wadwa, MD, and the charge nurse, Theresa Cox, RN CDCES.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The position serves as a Registered Nurse or Dietician at the Instructor level. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide direct diabetes care and education to newly diagnosed and established children with diabetes and their family.
  • Educate and case manage children who have type 1 and type 2 diabetes and atypical diabetes mellitus, working with families to achieve age-appropriate diabetes management goals.
  • Phone consultations with patients and their families, school nurses, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants and physicians in the community assisting with options in resolving complicated inquiries and/or issues related to diabetes management
  • Assist in the execution of clinical research studies with youth with type 1 diabetes, involving diabetes management technologies, including insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitors, and automated insulin delivery systems.
  • Adhere to research regulatory standards when working with a clinical trial participant
  • Provide diabetes education to pediatric patients enrolled in clinical trials at the Barbara Davis Center, following applicable protocol requirements and regulations
  • Train pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes and their caregivers on how to use advanced diabetes devices (insulin pumps, CGMs) for their diabetes care, within the context of a clinical trial
  • Contribute to ongoing development and improvement of nursing/educator electronic medical record documentation/data entry programs.
  • Participate as a presenter or collaborator in development of educational materials for conferences and classes conducted by the staff at the Barbara Davis Center related to diabetes management
  • Participate in professional development of the nursing/diabetes educator team through attending diabetes related conferences. Assisting in development of policies and procedures to maintain high standards of existing ADA Accredited Diabetes Program.
  • Participates in Clinical Quality Improvement programs through individual and group work on annual clinical care goals.

This position requires good interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrated ability to work under pressure, the ability to multitask and the willingness to learn and comply with relevant laws, rules, regulations and policies. 

Working Conditions

This position is 100% FTE involving clinical care and pharmaceutical research.  Schedule primarily Monday – Friday, but occasional weekend or extended hours required for research studies.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range for this position has been established at $54,000 to $75,000

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications 

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

  • Registered Nurse or Dietitian licensed to practice in Colorado
  • Bachelor's Degree

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience in childhood diabetes
  • Certificate in Diabetes Care and Education from the National Certification Board.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) would be highly valued but not required.
