DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

As a Chief Resident, the residency program director and/or Department Chair is responsible for determining your work assignments. Each faculty member is expected to perform over the full range of responsibilities in the area of teaching, research/scholarship and service. Clinical services are a component of your faculty responsibility, with or without the presence of a trainee. Your responsibilities in the areas of teaching, research/scholarship and service include, but are not limited to the following areas.

TEACHING

With the guidance of the Residency Program Director, the Chief Resident will be responsible for coordinating the educational conferences of the training program including (but not limited to): Fundamentals of Medicine series, Noon Conference, Ambulatory noon conferences, Tuesday Block Conferences, Tuesday Ambulatory Block, Journal Clubs, Site-Specific Conferences (Ross, East, MICU), M&M Conference and Internal Medicine Grand Rounds. Current departmental technical resources and audiovisual equipment will be made available to the chief resident for educational conferences. Chief residents will be involved in supervision, direct observation and evaluation of trainee clinical performance and will provide individual coaching and remediation for residents as assigned by the program director. There will be opportunities and expectations to teach medical students in various settings throughout the year.

RESEARCH/SCHOLARSHIP

The Chief Resident may elect one half day per week of protected time to devote to scholarly development upon approval by the Residency Program Director. The Chief Resident will submit a plan of activity for review and approval by the Residency Program Director no later than September 15. The scheduled half day for scholarly development will be decided upon approval of the plan and must take into consideration critical program activities. To continue with scholarly development time, the Chief Resident will be required to submit quarterly updates to the Residency Program Director.

SERVICE

Your service commitments will include: 1) attending for three 2-week rotations on a General Medicine Ward; 2) providing coverage for 1-2 half day clinics per week which includes continuity clinic preceptorship and other general medicine clinic coverage; 3) Staffing procedures for interns and residents who are attempting to meet the required number of procedures and 4) One of the chief residents serves as “Chief resident on call” at all times to provide administrative support and clinical guidance to internal medicine trainees.  Each chief resident will share an assignment as emergency moonlighting back-up that will be further detailed in an appendix.  Any additional or substitute clinical assignments must be with the approval of the Vice Chair for Education and the Program Director. Your service commitments will include clinical service at the OSUWMC facilities and other clinical sites as assigned. It is anticipated that you will be an active participant in divisional, departmental, and college committee functions.

ADMINISTRATION

The Chief Resident group will be responsible for scheduling and disseminating the yearly rotation and monthly call schedules for all teaching services, including holiday schedules, according to ACGME guidelines. Continuity clinic schedules and scheduling of structured educational programming will also be provided by the chief resident group.  Chief residents will contribute to coordination and mentorship for resident participation in quality improvement, research/scholarship, and teaching skills development.  While chief residents work as a team, for many of the above listed activities one or more chief may accept predominant responsibility for an area.  In addition, the Chief Resident will be a member or other participant of the following committees: Program Evaluation Committee, Medical Grand Rounds Steering Committee, House staff Evaluation Committee, Housestaff Education Committee, Intern Selection and Recruitment Committee, and Residency Clinical Competency Committee (non-voting participant).  Service on committees other than those listed may be suggested by the Chief resident, but are at the discretion of the Program Director.

Minimum Education/Experience Requirements:

M.D. or equivalent required; Requires successful completion of a background check; qualified candidates may be asked to complete a pre-employment physical, including a drug screen and background check.
