The UCDFCM Global Health (GH) Fellowship is a one or two-year post-residency Family Medicine fellowship designed for Physicians interested in caring for underserved and vulnerable populations while strengthening their competency and academic standing in global health through scholarship activity, which may include the completion of Masters of Public Health (MPH) in Global Health. The GH Fellowship is a non-ACGME-accredited fellowship in which the Fellow is appointed as an entry-level faculty member in the UC Department of Family & Community Medicine.
Essential Functions
Fellows will deepen their competencies in the following six areas of Global & Underserved Health: 1) Describe and address the determinants of health as a foundation in global and underserved health; 2) Interpret health in the context of the principles of community and population health; 3) Provide high quality care in low resource settings and for vulnerable populations; 4) Demonstrate effective communication and cultural humility in patient, team, and community relationships; 5) Advocate effectively on an individual, local, and national level within the context of global health ethics; 6) Apply the attitudes and skills of sustainable servant-leadership in multiple healthcare settings including interdisciplinary teams.
Fellows will work with their appointed GH Fellowship Advisor to develop a specific set of Objectives that achieve the above Competencies. As a result of the GH Fellowship, Fellows will:
- Improve their ability to provide high quality clinical care to meet the needs of patients in low-resource settings and vulnerable populations.
- Achieve a Master of Public Health (MPH) graduate degree, if desired.
- Develop scholarship, public health, and cross-cultural experience in partnership with our overseas non-government organization in Guatemala.
- Apply point-of-care ultrasound to improve clinical care.
- Develop leadership, teaching, and scholarship skills and experience as a UC department faculty member in the Division of Global & Underserved Health.
Minimum Requirements
The following qualifications/competencies are required in order for an applicant to be considered for the Global Health Fellowship:
- Completion of a U.S. ACGME-accredited Family Medicine Residency in good standing.
- ABFM Board Certification.
- Medical licensure in the State of Ohio.
- CCLA-level fluency in Spanish is ideal.
- Foundational knowledge in global health, such as the completion of a 1-month medical school course or residency rotation.
- Experience in an overseas, developing country (LMIC) setting for at least 1 week.
Activities/Curriculum
To accomplish the GH Fellowship Objectives, residents will participate in the following activities:
- Clinical Care: Provide primary care for underserved patients at a level necessary to fund their budget and at an agreed upon designated site(s).
- Precepting: Precept TCH/UC Family Medicine/FM Psychiatry residents at TCHMA Mt Auburn Family Medicine Center (Family Medicine only); Precept UC Global Health Field Experience course participants (residents, students) in Guatemala, in partnership with Wuqu Kawoq.
LMIC Partner Capacity Building
Work with UC’s Guatemala partner Wuqu Kawoq in improving their healthcare mission through activities within the Division of Urban, Underserved and Global Health.

- Academic Leadership: Contribute to the academic mission of the Global and Underserved Health Division in the area of Global Health through a combination of the following additional activities: Teach UC family medicine residents in Global Health Conferences (once per year); Teach/oversee select topics/modules in the now longitudinal Global Health Course (one-two topics/modules per Course); Assist the Global and Underserved Health Division in strengthening its service to the department and resident training by organizing/dispensing/posting Global Health updates/news/studies; Work with the Global Health and Research division to publish and/or present at a national conference a topic of interest in Global Health.
Required Education
Professional Degree - MD, DO or equivalent.
Required Trainings/Certifications
Current Ohio medical license by the date of hire.
Compensation/Certification
The compensation/certification for the Global Health Fellowship includes:
- Appointment: Appointment in the UCDFCM as an entry level adjunct faculty member.
- Salary: PGY4-plus Salary & Benefits based on UC COM Fellowship Salary Scale and level of fellow.
- 1.0 FTE = 0.5 FTE Clinical Care (UCH) + 0.15 FTE Academic (UC) + 0.35 FTE (MPH Course).
- 40h/w = 20h/w Clinical Care (UCH) + 6h/w Academic (UC) + 14h/w MPH Course.
- CME: PGY4-plus CME Reimbursement based on UCDFCM faculty CME.
- GH Fellowship Certificate: A University of Cincinnati approved Certificate of Completion for a Fellowship in Global Health.
