Job Summary:

This is a unique opportunity to work in an academic and clinical Adult Orthopedic Sports Surgery practice. The position will be a full-time exempt (non-hourly) Instructor - Physician Assistant position in the Department of Orthopedics under the supervision of Dr. Michelle Wolcott. Our clinical practice is based at the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, Colorado and throughout our clinical sites in Denver, Broomfield, and Boulder, Colorado. Clinical responsibilities include active participation in the continued growth of the Sports Medicine Center and Joint Preservation Program at the University of Colorado Sports Medicine division. This employee will work at various locations including, but not limited to Colorado Sports Medicine Clinic, Broomfield Hospital and Inverness Steadman-Hawkins Clinic.  The position is not eligible for tenure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Obtain detailed medical histories and perform physical examinations on assigned patients.
  • Assess and treat acute and chronic medical problems, with a focus on both the shoulder and knee, and the broader musculoskeletal system.
  • Provide direct patient care to a specified patient population.
  • Write prescriptions for medications, Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), imaging studies, and Durable Medical Equipment (DME) as needed.
  • Complete FMLA and other forms and school notes as required.
  • Assist in providing pre-op, intra-op, and post-op care.
  • Write appropriate orders, including those for narcotics and other scheduled drugs.
  • Perform casting, splinting, dressing placement, and joint aspirations and injections.
  • Perform emergency life-saving procedures in cases such as cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, massive hemorrhage, or similar emergencies.
  • Notify attending physicians on call, house physicians on call, or supervising physicians regarding any unusual or unexpected events or problems requiring direct physician consultation.
  • Practice safety, environmental, and infection control methods.
  • Coordinate the activities of patient care and support staff within the clinic.
  • Work with the team to ensure the smooth operation of the clinic.
  • Write progress notes on patients' office and hospital charts, indicating patient status and treatment procedures performed.
  • Maintain other records as required.
  • Provide health education to patients and their families.
  • Train and supervise medical students, residents, fellows, Physician Assistant students, and other health professional students engaged in specific clinical activities.
  • Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature review, in-service meetings, and workshops. 
  • Participate in educational programs related to sports medicine, including weekly academic conferences, journal clubs, and symposia.
  • Assist in community outreach events, including giving educational talks, organizing, planning, and attending events related to sports medicine.
  • Help develop written educational materials and treatment protocols for specific conditions and post-operative care.
  • Assist in preparing and giving PowerPoint and poster presentations for educational purposes at institutional, local, and national meetings.
  • Perform clinical and translational research related to specific conditions.
  • Assist in the preparation of manuscripts for publication.
  • Become proficient in the use of the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and serve as a resource for other healthcare providers. 

Administration

  • Complete FMLA and other work forms/school notes as needed.
  • Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops.
  • Help develop written educational materials and treatment protocols for specific conditions and post-operative care.

Operating Room

  • Assist in the operating room several times per week.
  • Assist in providing pre-op, intra-op and post-op care; write appropriate orders, including those for narcotics and other scheduled drugs.
  • Perform emergency lifesaving procedures in cases such as cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, massive hemorrhage, or similar emergencies.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist in and take calls regarding telephone triage of urgent patients.
  • Assist orthopedic surgeons in the operating room setting.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:  

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.  

  • State of Colorado Certified Physician's Assistant or Inclusion on the State of Colorado Advanced Practice Registry as an Advance Practice Nurse
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants
  • CPR or BLS Certified 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience preferred. May be willing to train new graduate with previous hospital/orthopedic experience or exceptional qualities.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification; certification pending, as documented by temporary certificate or the ability to obtain certification prior to hire date. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Flexibility is required as the nature of the position will change over time as one gains knowledge and experience with sports medicine and orthopedic conditions.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

$110,000 - $120,000 

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
