Position Summary

San Diego State University (SDSU) is one of the 23 campuses of the California State University System and is the oldest and largest higher education institution in the San Diego region and the third-largest in the state of California.  Founded in 1897, SDSU confers bachelor’s degrees in 79 areas, master’s degrees in 64, and doctorates in 13. Designated as a ”Doctoral/Research University-intensive” by the Carnegie Foundation, SDSU is among the top ten percent of higher education institutions in the United States.

This position is within the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. The department has 20 Tenured/Tenured Track Faculty, 16 temporary faculty, over 40 teaching associates, 5 full-time technical staff, and 2 administrative staff. The department provides B.A., B.S., M.A., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry. The department offers a comprehensive undergraduate research program in which most undergraduates participate, an M.S. degree which is a true research degree with thesis, and a Ph.D. through a Joint Doctoral Program, which combines the resources of the chemistry departments of SDSU and UC, San Diego. Our on-campus facilities provide a substantial inventory of modern chemical instrumentation and computer equipment in a modern laboratory building.  Additional resources are available through collaborations with faculty at nearby institutions and with the extensive local chemical industry.

The primary functions of the Instructional Support Technician II (IST II) are, under the supervision of the department chair, providing comprehensive support services to a variety of upper and lower division laboratory courses in chemistry. This involves providing materials, supplies, equipment, and related logistical support for the courses. Primary responsibilities will also include the collection and storage of hazardous waste and updating inventory records and databases. In addition, the position involves helping coordinate the activities of Teaching Associates, as it relates to the instruction of laboratory courses.
