Description

The Division of Social Sciences at the University of Chicago invites applications for appointment as Instructional Professor (IP) in Geographic Information Science (GIS) and the College. This is a full-time, career-track teaching position. The initial appointment will be dependent on rank but will be no less than two years. Appointments will begin Academic Year 2023-24 and are renewable with the opportunity for promotion. 

The IP will annually teach 6 quarter-long undergraduate classes, including one course in the Social Science Inquiry – Spatial Analysis core sequence and at least two courses in the current undergraduate GIS track. Other courses should deal with various aspects of GIS and spatial analysis, such as geocomputation, geovisualization, spatial data bases, spatial statistics and spatial optimization. The IP is also expected to maintain a high level of active engagement with the field of Geographic Information Science, including being an active member of the Center for Spatial Data Science (http://spatial.uchicago.edu ), in order to ensure the University of Chicago curriculum reflects the latest methodologies and new directions in research.

The IP will also be responsible for participating in co-curricular activities, advising undergraduate majors and other students on quarterly course selections, and advise undergraduate students on post-graduate opportunities. The IP will also be expected to write letters of recommendation for students going to market. 

This position will be part of the Service Employees International Union.


Qualifications

The position requires a PhD in Geography, Urban Planning, or a related discipline focusing on basic research questions in Geographic Information Science; the degree must be in-hand prior to the start date. Teaching experience with undergraduate courses is desired. The candidate's record must demonstrate potential to design and teach courses to undergraduate students at a selective research university.
