Job Description

The School of Life Sciences (SOLS) Teaching and Learning Center (TLC), at the ASU Tempe campus, is seeking a talented, collaborative Instructional Designer to support course development and provide guidance to instructors in designing and teaching immersion (on-campus) and online courses, incorporating research-based teaching practices, and applying industry-recognized instructional design principles to ensure accessibility, diversity, equity, and inclusive teaching. The TLC team focuses on enhancing course delivery effectiveness and efficiency at scale while improving student retention and outcomes.

Our embedded instructional design team leads course development, supports instructional technology initiatives to ensure effective and sustainable practices, and provides onboarding and professional development for instructors and teaching assistants. The School of Life Sciences is a leading innovator in the areas of online learning and virtual reality for science curriculum development.  This unique role will also partner with colleagues from The College, Enterprise Technology, EdPlus, and other internal and external stakeholders to represent our unit, communicate unit needs, and share best practices.

Applicants should be motivated to elevate and optimize teaching and learning experiences by working with faculty to support efficient course delivery. The ideal candidate is a proactive, service-minded, collaborative instructional design and teaching expert who is skilled in implementing various digital learning tools in an educational setting.

Under general direction, assists faculty and/or other subject matter experts in the design and development of learning materials using multiple instructional technologies and applying best practices in teaching and learning.

Essential Duties

  • Works collaboratively in a team environment to support School of Life Sciences immersion and online programs and courses.
  • Partners with faculty and/or other subject matter experts to design and develop engaging, interactive, and instructionally sound learning materials, including assessments, in alignment with learning objectives and goals.
  • Assists in writing learning objectives to incorporate content standards and curates content in support of objectives.      
  • Utilizes and recommends effective and creative uses of technology to enhance instruction including content authoring tools, document creation applications, presentation tools, and other technology resources to develop custom products.
  • Provides technology support for faculty using digitally enhanced teaching and learning products.  
  • Provides troubleshooting, technology, documentation, event information, and educational design consultation support to faculty and subject matter experts
  • Assists in the support of the Canvas learning management system. Troubleshoots Canvas issues.
  • Creates faculty professional development programming (online, in-person) to promote inclusive pedagogy, culturally responsive teaching, accessibility, and innovation in learning technology.
  • Evaluates training needs, designs or redesigns training programs and supplemental materials, and implements training programs to meet changing needs and objectives.
  • Collaborates with others (e.g. software developers, technologists, project managers, graphic designers) to review and edit content and integrate contributions to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of design and development models and processes. 
  • Assists with evaluation of technology effectiveness, quality assurance, editing, adapting content and implementing recommended changes to improve learning.
  • Develops and maintains resources such as tutorials, reference material, design standards, content resources, templates, and tools for instructional development.
  • Remains current on, evaluates, identifies and communicates best practices, learning theories, and instructional technologies, and incorporates these into content standards and learning objectives.
  • Manages multiple projects, tracks project status, and prioritizes competing demands to meet established timelines.
  • Assumes or coordinates other duties or projects as assigned or directed.
  • Knowledge of instructional design and pedagogical approaches, practices, and tools for diverse audiences/environments. 
  • Uses a variety of industry-leading technologies and products for the development of content, presentations, web pages, web applications, and tutorials. 
  • Uses Canvas learning management system. 
  • Uses troubleshooting computer and web technology issues on common platforms. 
  • Effective organization and time management in an environment with multiple priorities and short deadlines. 
  • Effective communication. 
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field AND Three (3) years of providing learning/instructional design and/or technology development services. Or, any equivalent combination of experience or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. 


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a graduate degree in Educational Technology or related field.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills and experience in building and maintaining effective working relationships with faculty, administrators, and staff
  • Experience working in a higher education environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional design theory and methods
  • Experience in using e-learning authoring tools and software
  • Experience in designing, developing, implementing, and revising online courses and course materials
  • Advocate for diversity, inclusion, representation, and accessibility while promoting and employing Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in service to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Quality Matters rubric or similar online course design metrics
  • Experience in designing and developing job aids, online tutorials, lectures, and other multimedia content
  • Demonstrated knowledge of course development in Canvas LMS
  • Experience in project management (e.g. managing time, establishing priorities, distributing responsibilities, meeting milestones and deliverables)
  • Experience in researching and resolving technology issues
  • Experience in data-driven instructional coaching, including classroom observation protocols
  • Experience in providing learning technology support in classrooms and working in Canvas/LMS learning management systems

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse 75 percent; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work 10 percent.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds 15 percent. 
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
