Maintaining and protecting the radiological safety and health of BNL employees, the public and the environment is our mission. Our professionals and technicians are certified and provide expertise in support of the overall BNL mission by use of field deployed Facility Support personnel, an accredited Personnel Monitoring service, a fully functional Instrumentation & Calibration facility, expertise in Radiological Engineering, and the handling of Isotopes and Special Nuclear Materials.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide professional Health Physics support and oversight to the Laboratory in the areas of Accelerator Safety Basis, Nuclear Safety Basis, and Radiological Protection.
• Support the technical review of laboratory Safety Assessment Documents (SADs), Accelerator Safety Envelopes (ASEs), and procedures needed to ensure safe accelerator commissioning and operations.
• Active support of and membership on the Laboratory Environment Safety and Health Committee.
• Review and recommend for approval all radiation protection aspects during design, operation, and maintenance of BNL accelerators and associated systems.
• Review engineering designs for new or modified accelerator/nuclear facilities.
• Participate as a member on organizational radiation safety committees.
• Participate as a member of the Laboratory’s Safety Basis/Nuclear Safety Sub-Committee.
• Participate as a member of Internal Readiness Reviews (IRRs) and Accelerator Readiness Reviews (ARRs).
• Perform Waste Characterization Analysis/independent validation for the Waste Management Division.
• Perform documented assessments of key accelerator/nuclear safety programs such as Configuration Management (CM), Unreviewed Safety Issue/Question (USI/USQ) Process, and hazard identification as a part of BNL’s Contractor Assurance Program.
• Perform and document instrument sensitivity studies for proposed use in monitoring specific source terms
• Support the Radiological Control Division Quality Assurance Program
• Network with other DOE contractor accelerator and nuclear safety professionals.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in Radiation Protection/Health Physics/Nuclear Engineering.
• Current American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) Certification in Health Physics (CHP).
• At least 15 years progressively responsible related work experiences in areas of Operational Radiation Protection/Health Physics
• At least 5 years’ experience managing a team of Radiation Protection/Health Physics staff.
• Strong practical application of DOE regulations and applicable standards (e.g. 10 CFR 835, 10 CFR 830, DOE O 420.2C/2D).
• Experience performing or evaluating hazards analyses, radiological shielding designs, and interpreting radio-analytical sample results.
• Excellent leadership, teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Work experience at a high-energy particle accelerator facility, nuclear facility, or in a position providing oversight to an operating facility’s safety basis.
• Practical experience in Internal/External Dosimetry, Radiation Shielding Analysis using MCNP, Accelerator Health Physics.
• Work experience at a DOE Nuclear (HazCat 3 or greater) Facility.
• Served on an Accelerator Readiness Review (ARR) team or other facility readiness review team.
• Familiarity with Monte Carlo simulation codes (e.g., MCNP, FLUKA, etc.) and their use in developing estimates of required facility shielding.
• Lean Six-Sigma Certification

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

• Moderate lifting (less than 30 lbs.)
• Alertness, hearing alarms, understanding speech and speaking/communication.

OTHER INFORMATION:

• Occasional travel (once or twice per year) to other DOE National Labs.
• Selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate position level dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge, skills, as well as years of relevant experience.

Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, and certifications, and also aligned with the internal peer group.
