Position Purpose:
The Department of Chemistry is seeking applications for a Grants & Contracts Manager. This position reports to the Director of Finance at the Department of Chemistry and is responsible for the oversight, coordination, planning, development, and implementation of all pre & post award grant activities, as well as management of other fund types, for a number of faculty and a Center.

Position Complexities:
This Grant & Contract Manager is responsible for a portfolio which includes two, and up to five, Chemistry faculty, as well as serves as primary administrative and financial contact for the Molecular Engineering Materials Center (MEM-C, uwmemc.org). The Grant & Contracts Manager plays a key role in the implementation of administrative, programmatic, and fiscal functions of MEM-C. They work closely with the Managing Director, Shared Facilities Manager, Associated Directors, and Center Staff to assist in the execution of MEMC’s and the Shared Facilities Manager’s activities. The position has delegated authority for establishing and maintaining processes and procedures that support the programs of MEMC and the Shared Facilities Manager – specifically those related to research administration, budget management, and financial commitment tracking processes. This position regularly exercises independent judgment and discretion in work directly related to business operations.

The research proposals, demands of the sponsors, and the research activities are complex. Advance budgeting, and both project management and people management skills are required.  The Grant Manager must assess both the short and long term implications of budget expenditures and advise researchers of compatibilities and/or conflicts.  The position requires knowledge of federal, state, university and sponsor policies and best practices around grant and contract submission, expenditure monitoring, and closing.

Position Dimensions and Impact to the University
The PIs in the Department of Chemistry collaborate extensively with other UW PIs, PIs at other institutions, and industry partners worldwide. This enables the university to do research in new, cutting edge areas that brings in many millions of federal dollars and many jobs to the UW. This position will be responsible for the fulfillment of this mission by ensuring successful proposal submission, resource allocation, and reporting in compliance with all regulations and best practices.

MEM-C is funded by the National Science Foundation and is highly active within the UW, academia, and local and global high-tech business community. MEMC programs: train students, broaden the participation of groups underrepresented in STEM disciplines, support novel, cutting-edge research, facilitate the use of state-of-the-art instrumentation, and build a community of researchers, business leaders, and entrepreneurs.
