Position Overview
The GIS Analyst works with KU Libraries colleagues to support research, teaching, and learning involving Geographic Information Systems, geospatial data, and mapping applications for the spectrum of disciplines within the University of Kansas community. The Analyst participates in KU Libraries’ digital scholarship programs and services related to data and computational research and facilitates access to and use of GIS technologies and data collections. In this position, the Analyst:
- Consults with researchers, instructors, and students to support the use of geospatial data and technologies in teaching and research.
- Develops and delivers workshops and classroom instruction on geospatial data and technologies.
- Uses GIS technologies to acquire, create, manipulate, analyze, and present geospatial data.
- Utilizes fundamental concepts, methods, and standards of GIS, geography, spatial analysis, and cartography.
- Follows established practices to assess GIS data quality and manage data.
- Applies principles of map design, production, use, interpretation, and evaluation.

Job Description
40% Consultation and Outreach/Project Support
- Advise on methods, workflows, and issues related to GIS visualizations, research, and projects.
- Facilitate uses of GIS data, including licensed and open datasets.
- Contribute to efforts to deposit and preserve eligible GIS data into appropriate data repositories.
- Seek opportunities to integrate Library and campus geospatial data into KU research and teaching programs.
- Participate in KU Libraries’ services and program development such as data and project management, data visualization, Software Carpentry , Data Carpentry , and Research Sprints .
- Contribute to management of KU Libraries’ GIS & Data Lab , including GIS data, software, hardware, and policies.
- Contribute to campus efforts and policies related to Esri site license resources.
- Develop, carry out, or assist with GIS training and integrate geospatial literacy skills into course learning outcomes.
- Contribute to teaching Software and Data Carpentry workshops offered by KU Libraries and partners.
- Create and/or make accessible software, tools, or data to support teaching and learning.
- Identify and manage projects to capture and present the spatial contexts of KU Libraries’ data and map collections for public, teaching, and research access.
- Participate in professional development and training activities to maintain and extend expertise with evolving technologies and geospatial data.
- Share projects and research with other GIS professionals.
- Advances the libraries’ priorities and strategic directions through active participation in pursuits such as project teams, working groups, and committees.
Position Requirements
This position is considered hybrid, a combination of remote and on-site work as deemed by supervisor.
