SIX (6) OPENINGS FULL-TIME/NON-PERMANENT FRESHWATER RECREATIONAL FISHERIES TECHNICIAN SCIENTIFIC TECHNICIAN 2 Fish Program Mill Creek, Washington – Snohomish County Effective July 1, 2023, the Washington State Legislature has granted a 4% general wage adjustment to positions represented by the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals (WAFWP). Also, effective July 1, 2023, the Scientific Technician 2 classification will be changing from Salary Range 36 to Salary Range 40. Anticipated Appointment Length: 2.5 Months August 16, 2023 – October 31, 2023 As a creel technician, you will be responsible for interviewing anglers, recording fishing effort on the rivers, and recording species harvest. These technicians will work as part of a sampling team to provide in season estimates of salmon and game fish harvest on the Stillaguamish and Snohomish Rivers. In this dynamic role, you may be asked to help clear access trail/paths for spawning ground surveys as well as raft repair. You are excited to conduct angler interviews at boat ramps, WDFW access sites, and along the riverbank in some locations. We are seeking candidates who will support the WDFW mission of protecting, restoring, and enhancing fish and wildlife and their habitats, while providing sustainable fish and wildlife-related recreational and commercial opportunities through habitat protection and enhancement activities. Duties: Our Freshwater Recreational Fisheries Technician, Collects and summarizes recreational fisheries data in freshwater systems. Examines angler catch and sample salmonids and game fish including steelhead. Drives along the river enumerating angler fishing effort and catch at predetermine locations. Collects biological data: scanning for CWT’s, scales, length measurements, and DNA. Follows sampling protocol established by the WDFW biometricians for creel surveys. Records daily creel data using iPads. Conducts quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) over their own data and syncing it to the database at the end of each sampling day. Aids Supervisor with fisheries estimates entering data in excel workbook, fish database, ArcGIS, or R statistical program. Maintains and services equipment including electronic sampling gear (iPads), T wands, measuring board, and trucks. May participate in float surveys for creels, stream snorkel surveys, marine fry surveys, biological sampling of fish carcasses and/or spawning ground surveys as needed. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work Setting, including hazards: Primary field work in and around rivers and streams walking up to 3 miles on rugged often slippery/uneven terrain in and out of water and manipulating fish up to 50 lbs. Variable temperature and weather may be encountered in the field such as heavy rain, snow, fog, and extreme heat. Technicians might be asked to drive in areas where the roads are partially flooded or covered in snow to get to access sites. Majority of creel technicians time will be spent in a vehicle driving to each sampling location on the river and waiting for anglers to complete their fishing trip for interviews. May encounter swift moving water during moderate river flows and log jams operating a pontoon. Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations. There will be periodic computer work at WDFW regional office. Schedule: Typically, work schedule is Monday through Sunday, non-scheduled, 24/7. Weekend work, non-consecutive days off, and occasional long hours required. Travel Requirements: Travel is required from your assigned duty station to river sites. Technicians will cover a large spatial area daily to survey. There is the possibility to use agency automobiles as well as personal vehicles if authorized. Tools and Equipment: Agency will provide trucks, exposure apparel (raincoat and pants, hat, waders/boots), sampling gear (knives, scissors, tweezers, hemostats, measuring board, PFD, iPad, T wand) and laptop. Customer Interactions: Strong customer service skills are essential to communicate with the public and recreational anglers, private landowners, and co-managers regarding current fishing regulations and regulatory actions.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least 6 semester or 9 quarter hours of natural science classes. Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science, and two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1. Or Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science, and two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist. License: Valid driver’s license. Training: Successful completion of agency training and/or certification for assigned watercraft dependent on supervisory direction, position need, and training availability. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of a four-year degree or equivalent in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science. Capability to identify river stage salmonids, juvenile salmonids, and other game fish species. Knowledge of the watersheds and fisheries of the Snohomish County. Experience with fisheries creel methodology. Experience operating a non-motorized watercraft (i.e., pontoon or kayak) for creel or spawning ground surveys.
