THREE (3) OPENINGS FULL-TIME/NON-PERMANENT FISH HATCHERY SPECIALIST 2 (FHS2) WDFW HATCHERIES DIVISION LYONS FERRY HATCHERY Duty Station Options: Cottwood Pond - Anatone, Washington Dayton Acclimation Pond - Dayton, Washington Anticipated Appointment Length: 3 Months January 31st, 2022 - April 30th, 2022 Are you a conservationist looking to protect salmon, steelhead, and their natural habitats? We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Fish Hatchery Specialist to work alongside a diverse team to support salmon conservation while providing sustainable fish and wildlife recreational opportunities in the state of Washington. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) currently operates 87 hatchery facilities, the majority dedicated to producing salmon and/or steelhead. Hatcheries have operated in Washington State for more than a century, beginning with a facility on the Kalama River in 1895. With that in mind, This is an opportunity to perform sound fish culture practices and make sound fish culture decisions to meet WDFW program goals. The optimal applicants set an exemplary example, have a positive can-do attitude, are eager to work hard and have excellent fish husbandry skills. Picture yourself performing scientific, technical, and related maintenance duties at Lyons Ferry Hatchery and trap sites, rearing anadromous and non-anadromous species of fish. Duties Our Fish Hatchery Specialist 2’s, Calculate and feed fish according to pond populations and weight samples - adjusts feed size and amount fed as needed. Monitor fish behavior/health, egg and fish production and disinfect and enumerate eggs. Identify, sort, and sample species for spawning and adult distribution. Respond to alarms, determining and taking appropriate action. Monitor and maintain facility support systems. Performs maintenance duties in/round hatchery and residences to preserve a clean and safe working environment. Respond to questions from visitors to the facility. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work Setting, including hazards: Work environment is mainly outdoors under all weather conditions – tasks require working in and around water. Schedule: Typical work schedule is 24/7, Sunday – Friday, 40 hours/week. Travel Requirements: Frequent travel weekly to the acclimation pond. Very little travel is associated with work. Tools and Equipment: Pickup, blower feeder, hand tools and trap tools. Customer Interactions: Frequent encounters and communicating with the public. Qualifications REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: One (1) year of experience as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 AND successful completion of agency supervised training program. OR An Associate’s degree in fisheries technology or closely allied field AND one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery. OR Three (3) years of education towards a Bachelor’s degree in fisheries or closely allied field AND one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery. OR Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school AND one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery. Please Note: Three (3) years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the required education. Certifications/Licenses: A valid driver’s license.
