Position Summary and Duties
The Faculty Director of Messina provides leadership in the collaborative process of recruiting, training, and supporting Messina faculty members participating in the Messina program. The Faculty Director of Messina also supports the development of campus-wide Messina programs and most notably, the Common Text Program, that helps develop students in the habits of the mind conducive to rich and serious intellectual inquiry and advance the Messina learning outcomes. The incumbent works closely with Student Development and Academic Affairs, specifically reporting to the Dean of Undergraduate Studies and collaborating with Student Development through the Student Development Director of Messina. 
Position Responsibilities Include:
1. Faculty Development: Organize, publicize, and execute faculty and mentor development opportunities that enhance faculty member’s knowledge and skills pertaining to first-year seminar pedagogy, integrated learning, equity and inclusion, and high-impact practices. Faculty development initiatives ordinarily include the following activities and practices:
• New Faculty and Mentor Workshop (typically held twice – one in May and once in August).
• August Workshop – in person and virtual sessions.
• January Workshop – in person or virtual sessions.
• Consult with individual faculty members on issues specific to their Messina courses, advising, and classroom management.
• Assist faculty and administration in offering one-time events, consultations, and workshops (and try to work into already existing programs).
Attend at least one conference per year in the fields of first-year experience, advising and student success
• Read scholarship, white papers, and publications associated with first-year seminars and high-impact practices.
2. Co-Chair the Common Text Committee
• Co-chair the Common Text Committee with the Student Development Director of Messina.
• Oversee the development of the Common Text study guide, essay and creative expression contest, and facilitator guide.
• In conjunction with Student Development Director of Messina, review assessment data and target areas for improvement; develop faculty and student development opportunities to address target areas.
3. Participate in Activities the Support Messina Assessment, Communications, and Recognition
- Represent Messina at Loyola Open Houses, Summer Orientation, Fall Welcome Weekend, and the Messina Family Week Teach-In. In many cases, you will be presenting to prospective and current students and their families. 
• Seek out and contribute to the development of grant proposals that will enhance Messina’s initiatives. If grants are awarded, assist with grant activities, and required reporting.
• Offer feedback on Messina’s annual program evaluation and learning outcome assessment.
• On occasion, present to Board of Trustees, Provost Council, Academic Senate, Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and COAD
• Contribute to the creation of the Messina Annual Report.
- Attend weekly Messina staff meetings.
• Meet with Dean of Undergraduate Studies as needed (1-2 times per month)
• Attend Faculty Assembly and other Academic Affairs-related meetings.
• Consult and advise department chairs regarding Messina questions and practices.
4. Messina Advisory Board (should also count as service demonstrating significant community wide impact)
• Co-Chair the Messina Advisory Board with the Student Development Director of Messina.
• Partner with Faculty Affairs committee to solicit and secure faculty membership.
• Compose annual report to Faculty Affairs Committee regarding the work of the Messina Advisory Board.
Required Qualifications
The position is only open to current full-time Loyola faculty members.
Skill in composing office correspondence, developing publications, compiling statistical data, and preparing reports. Excellent written and oral communication skills, efficient work habits, strong organizational skills, and a superior attention to detail.
Demonstrated ability to support and advocate for underrepresented students as well as creating opportunities dedicated to developing students’ understanding of identity development, privilege, oppression, social justice, bias and/or inclusive language/actions.
Available to work some nights and a limited number of weekends.
Must be able to support the University’s goals for institutional diversity, as well as the goals and values of a Catholic, Jesuit education.
